Primary Source: Middle Passage Image Analysis/ Reflection with Graphic Organizer
By Nemos Nook
This product has students analyze 5 images from the Middle Passage to answer the prompt, "What was life like for a slave on the Middle Passage?" They will use the "I see, I feel, I wonder" method for each image and then answer the prompt separately in a formal paragraph. This lesson ALWAYS encourages rich conversations among the students. There is a slide presentation that can be used digitally and shared with students on google drive and also a PDF version if teachers want to have students complete the lesson on paper.
Suggestions for use: I usually project the images and work through the slides with the students as a class so that we can discuss together. Students always have many thoughts and feelings about these images, and I want to make sure we flush these out in class. I then have them complete the writing prompt independently or for homework. Another option is to print the photos and have students do a gallery walk or stations.
Please let me know if you have any questions about how to use this resource.

Interactive Writing Bookmarks, Posters and Google Slides: Skills & Strategies
By Betsy Newmeyer
Use these 25 standards-based, interactive Writing Skills & Strategies Bookmarks, correlating posters, and Google Slides to differentiate for student needs and practice specific writing strategies. These can also be used for test prep, homework, small group instruction, and independent writing practice. Use the 23 Google slides to model skills for the whole class. Use the 8.5 x 11 inch poster during small group instruction to reteach a skill.
Bookmarks are designed with 4 bookmarks to a page, which saves on copying and paper waste, and much of the text is in the Open Dyslexic font to support struggling readers. Bookmarks and posters can be printed in either color or grayscale/B&W.
My own students are absolutely in love with these bookmarks. We recently completed the Show, Don't Tell bookmark since that is a skill so many kids struggle with. When coupled with the Tell Me A Great Story bookmark and Google Slide as a reminder how sensory details can bring a story to life, the kids were excited to get down to writing. And their stories actually turned out really good with a lot of variety to them.

Collaborative Story Time - Second Edition
By Language Arts Excellence
The first version of our Collaborative Story Time has been so popular that we decided to create a second edition to give our valued teachers more options. You do not need to have the first edition to enjoy this one but definitely check it out!
"Collaborative Story Time" is a communal writing activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique evocative photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.
With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is perfect for a Friday, a substitute plan, or simply for when students need a creative break without sacrificing learning and hard work. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!
