All of the STEM activities in this packet follow a 5-step process:

Introduction- This is the part of the lesson where the teacher defines the challenge and the students begin to brainstorm solutions. There are no right or wrong answers during this part of the lesson.

Planning- Students work together (usually with a partner or in a small group) to come up with a potential solution for the challenge.

Construction- This is the building stage!

Testing- The students test their designs to see if they have solved the problem, and met the challenge.

Evaluation- The students critique their designs and think about what they might change.

Festive way to make connections:

Students read or watch A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my students read A Christmas Carol and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for an engaging activity before the holiday. A Christmas Carol was a challenge for the students, so watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a fun distraction.

This active and engaging resource gets students moving and discussing. Students will make paper snowballs out of the provided cards. They will then use these for a snowball fight. When time is up, students will find a partner, uncrumple the paper, and have a discussion.

Students can reach connections and have discussions with the information they gather.

How can you use these task cards?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available in makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them.

⭐Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet with some of the challenges that require more problem solving and creativity.

⭐Practice sequencing by having students do several cards at a time, and then draw pictures of what they built (or the scenarios on the task cards) in the sequencing boxes.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, and then show and tell with the class or their parents. They can discuss what they made, liked, what they would improve, and how it solved the problem on the task cards. They can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.

Why do I think you will love this product, and what makes my challenge set unique?

I love silly stories that bring humor and adventure to life for kids, but that also force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose wacky stories where they are the main character. Silly scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving, and learning, are all part of the experience when completing these challenges.

The only rule is to HAVE FUN and allow those imaginations to soar!

Move and breathe through a childhood classic. The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood has been a favorite story in my classes for years, and with a librarian’s suggestion, I brought it to life through yoga for the first time in 2012. Now accompanied by our beautiful illustrations, we can use this yoga sequence to promote a lifelong love of learning, reading, and healthy habits.

Each of the characters in the story is paired with a yoga pose, and each page adds another character in order. As the sequence builds, the poses come together in a beautiful flow. Do the poses as you read, or read and then do the poses—whatever feels the best to you.

Help your students learn and visualize the nursery rhyme "1, 2 Buckle My Shoe" with this fun peek-a-boo craft retelling activity! Turn this craft into a reading station or literacy center with the printable pocket chart cards. Students can use these cards and the full page nursery rhyme to build the poem (great practice with concepts of print!), then use their completed craft to practice reciting 1, 2 Buckle My Shoe.

Students will lift the flaps on their craft while they practice reciting the nursery rhyme and connect a picture with each rhyme:

• 1, 2: Buckle my shoe
• 3, 4: Shut the door
• 5, 6: Pick up sticks
• 7, 8: Lay them straight
• 9, 10: A big, fat hen

This product includes a rectangular, numbered, liftable flaps. Students will put the shoe, door, sticks, straight (sticks), & hen under each correct flap to match the nursery rhyme- perfect for building vocabulary and comprehension.

There are two printable options when creating this craft:

• Print in color then have students cut and glue each part onto their craft
• Print in black and white then have students color, cut, and glue each part

This activity will help your students to memorize the nursery rhyme, comprehend what it is about, while also practicing rhyming! The excitement of lifting the flaps to see the pictures keeps them engaged throughout the rhyme.

The graphic novel is an aesthetically innovative genre in which meaning is created through the interplay of image and text. How do we read a novel in which two narrative channels — one verbal, the other visual — interact? And how do graphic novels challenge readers to expand the set of interpretive techniques that make up “close reading”? This bundle will help students understand complex questions about literary genres, aesthetic form, social and political history, and the responsibilities that come with representing historical atrocities like the Holocaust.

Here are some highlights from the 175-page curriculum:

• Pre-Reading Activity: Open this unit by reading and discussing Art Spiegelman's early 3-page comic, "Maus" (which was published in an underground comics magazine called Funny Animals in 1972). In addition to the 3-page comic itself, this unit features a double-sided Image Analysis Worksheet in which students encounter questions that will deepen their engagement with Maus. Answer key included. (10 pages)

• Discussion Question Handouts: Thirty-five pages of deeply thought-provoking discussion questions! One double-sided handout containing 8-10 questions for each of the book's 10 sections. The discussion questions are the beating heart of these lesson plans. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The questions could be used to focus students’ thinking prior to beginning a discussion, to foster in-class writing such as stop-and-jots, or to assign written reflections for homework. Guaranteed to elicit student engagement and foster profound discussions! (25 pages)

• Discussion Question Answer Keys: The answer keys to the discussion questions are informed by cutting-edge scholarship by historians and literature professors who specialize on topics like the Holocaust and Spiegelman's Maus. Of course, there is rarely a single "correct" answer for any question; rather, the discussions questions are made up of higher-order questions designed to foster lively exchanges and interpretive debates among students. They challenge students to build interpretive arguments that require the support of carefully selected textual evidence. (50 pages)

• Quick Writes: A "quick write" can be used at any time in a class to get students to pause and reflect on the text in writing. Introduce a quick write before you begin a discussion to allow students to collect their thoughts. Or roll one out toward the end of a discussion to let students capture and refine their best ideas. (10 pages)

• Image Analysis Worksheets: Three double-sided worksheets challenge students to analyze 10 visually complex panels from Maus. Students will reflect on how Spiegelman builds meaning by through the use of aesthetic strategies such as visual parallels, visual puns, symbolism, strategic ambiguity, the interweaving of past and present, etc. Help students figure out what it means to "close read" a graphic novel. Answer keys included. (10 pages)

• Quotation Race Worksheet: Students work in pairs to identify the speakers of 30 key quotations from Maus. Introduce this fun activity when you need to mix things up, or to refresh students' memories in preparation for the AP exam. Answer key included. (4 pages)

• Vocabulary Lists: Lists of 8 vocabulary words for every chapter, complete with definitions and sample sentences with the words as they are used in Maus. A total of 80 words. (10 pages)

• Reading & Vocabulary Quizzes: Daily quizzes with 10 questions on the nightly reading homework plus another 5 questions on the vocabulary words. If you choose not to have your students study vocabulary, you can still use the portion of the quiz devoted to reading comprehension. Grading these quizzes is simple and quick. They’re an easy way to log 10 grades into your gradebook. Answer keys included. (40 pages)

• Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on Art Spiegelman's complex graphic novel. Let students choose from one of four thought-provoking sample topics — or invite them to develop a similar topic of their own. Writing schedule and rubric included. (4 pages)
