Do you need engaging brain breaks or bell ringers? These mindful listening activities are an easy way to include music appreciation in any classroom or homeschool.

Just print and cue the music! Students begin listening and interpreting what they hear and feel. The music is available on YouTube or your favorite streaming services. There are no wrong answers, and no musical training is required. (great for sub plans!) There are five differentiated listening sheets included for each piece of music.

On January 28th, 1985, dozens of the time period’s most popular musicians gathered in Los Angeles to record a charity song for African famine relief. Setting stylistic differences and egos aside, they collaborated on a song that would make history. This documentary, which debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, examines how the song came to be, who was involved, and the implications of the recording.

This Doc (printable OR digital) asks students 9 thought-provoking questions for during and after viewing the film. This is NOT a guided viewing assignment; it's a series of thought-provoking questions that asks them to consider the film as a whole and to synthesize what they might already know about these musicians and the event with what they saw in the film. They are asked about the title, the lyrics to "We Are The World", the impact of the event, who planned the event and why, the artists who participated, the arrangement of the recording, the public's response, the impact of the song during this particular time period, etc.

I use this with my high school elective "Lyrics as Literature" with 9-12th graders, but I'd feel comfortable using it with upper middle school students as well.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Included you'll find 30 iterations across 10 pages of the same activity: labeling musical instruments and symbols.

You might find certain images could have multiple correct answers (e.g. "piano" and "keyboard" might be both correct). So long as learners can justify their answer, it's up to your discretion. But I have provided an answer key with the most likely answers.

These ADORABLE song cards are a FUN & EASY way to incorporate active movement songs into your classroom! I put these cards on the wall in my classroom near my circle carpet and let the children take turns picking out their favorite songs during our music & movement (dance party) time. These versatile cards can also be used in a pocket chart, laminated and placed on a metal binder ring, or used to make song sticks.

Creating a Movie using Microsoft Story Remix utilizes the free software from Microsoft as a part of Photos, available in Windows 10 and above. It allows students to create a movie using still pictures or video clips. You will need Windows 10 (or higher) on your computer to access and use it.

In these lessons, students are provided with links to several excellent tutorials (both print and video versions), as well as links to other resources to help them with their designs.

There are two projects included with this lesson to allow the teacher and student a choice in how to demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Story Remix. Use one, both, or let students choose!

The NFL season is BACK! Your older grade level kids will love RED ZONE

RHYTHMS!

Students will see an NFL team and their corresponding mascot and the students will have to spell out the team and mascot combo with that's right... RHYTHM!

The students will have to decipher the rhythmic syllables using triplets, eighth note pairs, and quarter notes. The rhythm will be shown on the animation on the next slide.

• You can either have the students notate it out on whiteboards...
• make rhythm cards or tiles
• have them write it on the board
• make it a race between A team vs B team to spell it out
• or however you can imagine!

There are 14 teams with 14 unique rhythms that the students will have to decipher. Here comes the kickoff!

End of Year "Music Talk" Activity for Chorus, Band, or Music Class

This resource features an engaging "Music Talk" activity that will have your students thinking, writing, speaking, and moving all in one class period during the last week of school! In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about music from famous figures like Taylor Swift and John Green and articulate why the quote aligns with their perspective on music. I use this lesson at the end of every year to see how my students' perspectives on music have developed and matured throughout the school year.
