There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock. This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Handmaid's Tale. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys to help yours run smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

In this escape room, students will try to escape from Gilead into Canada by solving 5 different puzzles, discovering an encrypted message, and finding clues along the way.

• In the first task, students must match characters to quotes they said within the novel. Highlighted boxes in the correct answers will reveal the code.
• In the second task, students must solve a word maze (because "a rat is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays inside the maze") and collect letters along the way that will reveal the code.
• In the third task, students must solve a colorful jig saw puzzle that when intact, displays an important quote from the novel.
• In the fourth task, students must answer challenging multiple choice questions about the novel that when correct, reveal the code.
• In the fifth and final task, students must decode an encrypted message (a quote from The Handmaid's Tale) from symbols they collected along the way.

Malala Yousafzai Activities: Nonfiction Biography Close Read Text Unit

This Malala Yousafzai activity pack can be used with ANY picture book or chapter book about Malala Yousafzai.

• Malala's Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai

This nonfiction text biography unit featuring Malala Yousafzai includes the following:

• annotation symbols for close reading (color and black-and-white)
• nonfiction reading passage (4 pages about Malala Yousafzai)
• sample annotations for the reading passage (all 4 pages)
• text-dependent questions with an answer key
• reflection questions
• character traits printable
• writing prompts

Though the intended grade levels are 3rd, 4th, and 5th, this product can be modified and used with other grade levels.
