Are your students struggling to grasp the formation of the preterite tense in Spanish, especially with all those pesky irregular verbs? This 6-page flip book will help your students organize all the information they need to conjugate Spanish verbs in the preterite and would be a great complement to any interactive notebook! The topics and verbs included in this resource are:

• 20 words that trigger the preterite (ex: anoche, el año pasado, de repente)
• regular -ar, -er, and -ir verb endings (4 example sentences included)
• stem-changing verbs (competir, convertir, medir, mentir, pedir, preferir, dormir, morir)
• verbs with irregular stems (andar, estar, tener, caber, poder, poner, saber, hacer, querer, venir) and irregular verbs (ser, ir, dar, ver, and decir)

This pdf file includes both a fill-in-the-blank student version and a completed answer key version of the flip book, both formatted to half-page size. Smash Doodles are a great way to assess Spanish reading while encouraging creativity. I love using this at the end of the year to demonstrate that a student can read independently and show what they know. Plus, it's easy to grade!

The set up for these Smash Doodles (along with the rubric) make it easy to grade.

2. Sample sentence starters (including a couple that would be great for subjunctive practice)

4. Smash Doodle Sheet that students fill out to make sure they meet all the criteria.

So, what is it?

A Smash Doodle is a way to show what students have learned from the chapter or reading assigned. It involves creativity, color, the most important vocabulary, students' thoughts and questions.

Who is it for?

This assignment works for any level of Spanish students. Any reading assignment can work with Smash Doodles. It can be used with novels meant for early language acquirers, short stories, poetry, etc. This assignment is automatically differentiated as students will choose the vocabulary that they need and not simply a list dictated by the teacher.

What does the assignment include?

This particular Smash Doodle assignment includes:

1. The title and chapter of the book
2. 5 vocabulary words in Spanish with the English translation and a hand-drawn picture in color.
3. 3 thoughts about the chapter in Spanish
4. 3 quotes from the book, in Spanish
5. 3 questions in Spanish . It could be things you are curious about or questions for characters
6. A main image that represents the chapter.

Print at 80% and include in your interactive journals.
