The following Waiting Program has been developed with positive behaviour support principles, including the use of relational reinforcers (praise and commendation). This program encourages implementation with a gradual waiting time and the use of visual supports. This one page program provides step by step instructions to implement a "waiting" program.

This program has been developed to be used for children under 13 years of age and clearly explains the process of increasing the time a child is able to wait (delayed gratification).

Separation can cause a lot of stress for families and can also significantly impact upon children’s wellbeing.

The great news is that there are some child-centered approaches and strategies that can support parents to connect with and understand their children's needs during times of separation and transition. For example when your child heads off to Day Care, Kindergarten or School.

There are times when children will often engage in behaviours such as tantrums, whining and whingeing, saying “No” and throwing items that are disruptive. It’s important to think about the purpose of this behaviour and whether the behaviour is accidently being rewarded or reinforced by what you do post behaviour. This framework is based on trauma-informed principles and knowledge. This framework is intentionally designed to teach and to shape the individual’s behaviour within consistent limits using non-blaming, non-shaming and empowering communication.
