How can you use this resource?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available alongside STEM and STEAM bins, makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!

⭐Complete one challenge a day in conjunction with the different ASK, BRAINSTORM, PLAN, CREATE, TEST, and REFLECTION prompts. These can be used as class/partner discussion, or as a writing or journal prompt.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, followed by show and tell with the class, or their families. Use the Discussion Questions to help guide this portion. Students can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. How to Catch a Snowman by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton, is a fictional winter story about kids trying to catch a clever snowman. The book lends itself to many ways to integrate STEAM, ELA, Math, and even Science activities to accompany the book. In this product, there are activities centered around STEAM, and ELA. You will need to get some supplies for students to build for the STEAM part and you can either build (or buy) a snowman yourself for the kids to try to trap or have them build one. (I would recommend things like bathroom paper tubes, pipe cleaners, and things like that).

Students will first read the book as a whole class and then focus on some story elements from the story. Once they have completed that, they will begin creating a plan to catch the snowman! (I would recommend having the students in groups). Then once students have completed their plan, they can then begin building their trap to catch the snowman. They will then test it and once they test it, they will complete the form that has them reflect on their build.

I always begin the activities the week before Christmas break as a way to help keep students engaged during the crazy week as they get ready for Christmas. I then return to the book when we get back from break to help refocus my students into the routine of school. I hope you enjoy these activities.

This back to school resource is a great way to introduce inventions and inventors to students. A link to an engaging Youtube video is featured. Included is a thoughts and suggestions sheet which highlights portions of the video and offers tips for discussion and video follow-up. There are three colorful posters with quotes from the video that should serve to inspire your class (two are similar - choose the one that suits your needs the best). How can you use these task cards?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available in makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them.

⭐Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet with some of the challenges that require more problem solving and creativity.

⭐Practice sequencing by having students do several cards at a time, and then draw pictures of what they built (or the scenarios on the task cards) in the sequencing boxes.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, and then show and tell with the class or their parents. They can discuss what they made, liked, what they would improve, and how it solved the problem on the task cards. They can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.

Why do I think you will love this product, and what makes my challenge set unique?

I love silly stories that bring humor and adventure to life for kids, but that also force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose wacky stories where they are the main character. Silly scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving, and learning, are all part of the experience when completing these challenges.

The only rule is to HAVE FUN and allow those imaginations to soar!
