This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the key figures that helped to abolish slavery and are studied in the 4th grade curriculum. Students will read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Samuel Cornish, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This activity will have students reading about how each individual aided the abolition movement. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

Inspirational quotes by influential people in Black history coloring bookmarks craft. Featuring quotes from Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass with their portraits and scenes of nature to color, these bookmarks are a great way to celebrate Black History Month or to teach history and social studies lessons all year round.

Coloring has been shown to have therapeutic benefits, helping to reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and mindfulness.

Ideas on using bookmarks:

• These bookmarks could be used as student rewards/gifts
• addition to no prep sub plans
• attached to a book or pack of coloring pencils as a small gift
• as early finishers
• for brain breaks/relaxing time
• bookmarks could be added to letters and cards;

Early finishers coloring bookmarks/cards with famous quotes by the abolitionists and civil rights activists Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, with the abstract zen background to color.

Here are some ideas on how to use bookmarks in your classroom or at a book club:

1. Book Club and Classroom Discussions: Use the bookmarks as prompts for book club discussions. Hand out different bookmarks to members and ask them to share their thoughts and insights related to the quote or illustration on their bookmark.

2. Have participants color the bookmarks while discussing their emotional responses to the novel.

3. Use bookmarks as student or book club member rewards/gifts.

❤️Looking for an engaging movement-based way to celebrate Harriet Tubman or Black History Month? These differentiated writing activities are perfect way to help your students celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman, while practicing literacy, and fine motor skills!

✏️Use the differentiated recording sheets to practice vocabulary, spelling, tracing, writing, and drawing!

• Students will have fun walking around the room to find the Harriet Tubman themed cards. Then, they match it by picture or number (depending on which game style you have chosen for your students) to the corresponding word on the response sheet. They will then trace, write, or draw that word on their recording sheet.

• Cards can also be placed in a container for individualized instruction, or added to your literacy center! Simply print and laminate for lasting durability.

• The vocabulary flashcards can also be used to create a word wall, play matching, “go fish”, or memory games, as writing prompts etc.
