Online magnetic alphabet letters word mat for phonics & spelling in Canva

By TamiaDesigns

Great for in class or online use, your students will use this digital magnetic letters spelling resource as they practice building or manipulating words in Canva. It works with any reading / early literacy / phonics instruction program in the classroom, in reading intervention, or tutoring.

Use it for:

  • Word Manipulation
  • Spelling Practice
  • Word Ladders

I have a Google Slides version of the file if you would prefer or need to use a Google product rather than Canva. Please check with your tech staff before buying this file whether your students have access to Canva.

In addition to the basic letter tiles, some of the slides have optional tiles with commonly used letter combinations, such as "th" or "sh". One slide also includes accented letters, which makes it useful for teachers of languages other than English. All of the letter tiles, with the exception of the accented letters, are labeled with alt-text for use with a screen reader. (See the file preview to see which letter combinations and accented letters are included and what the letter tiles look like.)

There are many ways to use any of these slides!

  • You could project one for large group work,
  • use it on an interactive whiteboard,
  • or you could share the file with students. They can each have their own copy, or the activity can be collaborative if they are given shared access to the file.
  • You can customize a file to include only the letter tiles students will need for a particular lesson.
  • Just like a 'regular' magnetic letters center activity, you can have students copy the words they've created onto a piece of paper. Unlike a regular magnetic letters center activity, you can go back and look at the work they did with the magnetic letters to see if any errors in the written copy were made with the letters or were made when copying.

You can share the files with students in all the usual ways that you can share Canva files. This activity is not just great for distance learning, but also works well for activities in class because you

  • have an unlimited supply of letters because any of the tiles can be duplicated (never run out of ‘e’s!)
  • don’t have to tidy the letters away after use or deal with unorganized letters (HUGE time savings!)
  • can stop students in the middle of an activity and they can come back to exactly where they left off at another time.

Teachers like you said:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Angela E. says, "My students love being able to move the tiles and practice decoding and blending words."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Margaret W. says, "Great resources and was easy to teach students how to use it."

FAKE NEW! Teaching Digital Literacy to Kids

By Gail Hennessey

The term FAKE News seems to be used a lot these days! April Fool's Day is a great opportunity to begin a discussion with students on FAKE and REAL news.

I have a student version....just send me a note and I'd be happy to send it along.

A recent survey found that many young people(and adults for that matter) can't seem to determine which is a real news story from a fake news story. We need to develop digital critical literacy with our students so they can try and determine the difference BEFORE they hit "send" to all their friends.

https://www.TeachShare.com/Product/FAKE-NEWS-Teaching-Digital-Critical-LiteracyFREEBIE-INA-4494790 FREEBIE on FAKE NEWS

Note: Additionally, I have another resource you may find of interest to use for such a discussion on fake/real news:

Want to introduce your students to the history of April Fools' Day? This resource provides a reading for students as well as lots of interesting famous April Fools’ pranks. Additionally, there are extension activities as well as a Test your April Fools' Day IQ(can you spot the True News Stories from the Fake ones?). There are also comprehension questions for the students to answer after reviewing the resource: April Fool's Day Reading/Activities

Again, the above resource, could be used throughout the year to foster digital critical literacy with kids.
