World War 2 Leaders Opinion Writing Unit Digital & Print | 5th & 6th Grade

By Creative Primary Literacy

This resource is a 5th grade or 6th grade discussion based writing unit discussing who was the most influential Allied leader of World War II: Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin or Franklin Roosevelt. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students learning about World History or World War 2.

The first lesson involves students retrieving facts from informational texts about Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt, and typing these on to an included fact sheet. In the second lesson students need to use these facts to write three to four paragraphs about the individual Allied leaders. In the third lesson students need to use prompt sheets to write up an introduction and a conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before typing up their work using the template provided.

NO PREP is needed!

This activity is an online resource, that uses Google Slides, and is linked to your Google Drive. It can be completed by students online using tablets or computers. If you are unsure how to allow the students to have their own individual copy take a look at the instructional video below:

St. Patrick's Day Digital Photo Writing Prompts & Word Bank Bookmarks

By Betsy Newmeyer

Inspire your young writers this St. Patrick's Day with these 5 no-prep, digital narrative writing prompts set to music and printable word bank bookmarks. These picture prompts are perfect for inspiring creative writing and are the perfect activity for a substitute teacher. The Google Slideshow includes 4 different St. Patrick's Day or Irish-themed images and 1 video prompt of Irish dancers. Each slides includes one image, a story title, and small word bank that can be edited or added to. When displayed in slideshow mode, each slide includes a musical soundtrack that will play automatically. Also included is a set of 4 different printable St. Patrick's Day word bank bookmarks. Each bookmark includes 20 relevant words to jumpstart the storytelling process. These bookmarks can be used in conjunction with the slides or separately.

You can either select one visual writing prompt to display on your interactive TV or other screen, or push this slideshow out to students via Google Classroom and let each student select which image they want to write about. Be sure to turn your volume up! In my own classroom, I ask students to analyze the image and song silently first before asking them to brainstorm story ideas with a peer. I guide my students to describe what they might see, hear, smell, or touch. Then we add in emotions we might feel, thoughts we'd have, and things we might say. To help support or challenge students, print and cut apart several copies of the word bank bookmarks. Ask students to think critically about what words might make sense in the story they want to tell and to include as many words from their list as possible/feasible. I promise your students will have a ton of fun while still being challenged to tell a great story.

Includes:

  • Google Slideshow: Each of the 5 slides includes . . .

  • Image (one of the slides is a video that will play)

  • Song that should play automatically

  • Story title (editable)

  • Mini Word Bank with 5 words (editable)

  • Print & Cut Bookmark Word Banks (1 page of 4 different bookmarks)

Digital Resource | End of Year Writing Activity | ABC Memory Book

By Aimee in Elementary

This is a digital product designed to be used with Google Classroom or another assignment sharing platform. Students will need to have a gmail account to access this.

Students will come up with a word to represent each letter of the alphabet (each letter has its own slide). The word should have a specific meaning for that year. For example, students will avoid putting general words like “book”, and instead write the specific name of a book read in that grade. That way, they have this to look back on and remember the year! They will write a short description of why the chose the word, and insert an image to go along with the word!

Students can work independently or in groups. Although this is an ABC book, it is appropriate and fun for any grade level! Students will need to get creative to think of words specific to that year.
