50 United States flags and abbreviations Google Sheets interactive activity
By TamiaDesigns
Looking for a different way for your students to work on the abbreviations for the 50 US states? This fun, interactive, and self-correcting, Google Sheets activity uses the states' flags as well as the names of the US states as the prompts. As students complete the answers correctly, they earn guesses at a mystery word, in a hangman-style game. (However, rather than trying to guess the word before the hanging man is complete, they are trying to do it before their battery is drained!) All the mystery words they are trying to reveal are related to US citizenship:
1. government
2. citizen
3. president
4. freedom
5. allegiance
There are some suggested discussion questions / fairly open-ended writing prompts to go with each of these words.
There are 5 sets of ten flags presented, with the states in the order that they joined the union. You will get access to 6 Google Sheets files - one with all 50 flags, and the other 5 files have 10 questions each. You will share the files with your students the same way you share any Google files. You choose whether to give them one file with all 50 states, or assign the other files individually.
Works well as a do-now / bell-ringer activity.
Neither you nor your students needs to have any knowledge of Google Sheets - students click on drop-down menus to access the questions, and type letters in boxes. They will get immediate on-screen feedback as to whether their answer is correct or not. In the file download I have included an answer key to all of the questions, including the mystery words,
