This package can be used in conjunction with the free iCell app (by Hudson Alpha), which is available for iPad and Android, as well as mobile devices. Note: the iPhone app is not as advanced as the iPad app as it only gives basic definitions of cell organelles. The app is a 3D interactive way for students to learn about plant and animal cells. You can move the cell around to see where the different cell organelles are located and click on the organelles to read basic, intermediate, or advanced, descriptions. I wish there were interactive programs like this when I had to learn about cells! This unit aligns with the Ontario Grade 8 Science curriculum. One way to use this package is have students use the app to explore the parts of an animal and a plant cell. After searching online for basic cell diagrams, I did not find any that looked similar to the app so I decided to draw a plant and animal cell in 3D to match the iCell app. The drawings match up to the cells used in the app. Students can look at the basic, intermediate, or advanced descriptions from the app and colour the cell using specific colours as identified in the handout. An additional set of questions is included to ensure students explore through each of the descriptions of the plant and animal cell. We can eat all kinds of plants. This parts of a plant sort includes real photographic images to sort. This sort includes flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. There are six pictures for each plant part.

Pictures Included:

Flowers: broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke, squash blossom, dandelion, honeysuckle

Fruits: raspberry, apple, lime, pepper, banana, blueberry

Leaves: lettuce, kale, mint, purple cabbage, spinach, parsley

Roots: radish, sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, onion, garlic

This product includes two different types of sorting activities. One set has full page size sorting mats for students to organize each plant picture. The second set has header cards in two sizes (one large sized for table top activities and a smaller size that can fit inside a task box). The picture cards work with both sets of sorting activities.

Posters, Anchor Charts and Answer Keys

This set also includes a set of posters or anchor charts. These charts can be used to check the answers of the pictures sorted or as an instructional tool to teach about the plants we eat before students begin the sorting activity. These posters also allow teachers to differentiate this activity for students. Those who need more support can use these posters as a guide to filling out their sorting mats.

How to Use:

Students will place the sorting mats on a table or on the floor. They will look at each plant picture and place it on the correct mat.

If you are looking for a winning combination of reading passages, movement, question trails and code words, The Endangered Animals Scavenger Hunt is for you! With this activity, students move around the classroom while using their reading comprehension skills and answering questions. Your students will be eager to finish the task with a mystery word and a secret 4-digit.

HOW IT WORKS: A “secret mission” is read, and students choose a card to start with. It does NOT matter what card students begin with because the order of completion does not matter. The code word question on their card will lead to a different card. All you have to do is print the clues, cut them in half, and hang or hide them! Although, you might want to laminate the clues for multiple uses.

Each of the 10 cards included with this activity includes a short reading passage about the topic, a question trail and a code word. Students will get “code word questions” to determine which card they should visit next. Since they are not told which card to visit next, they will be going around and reading all of the cards until they find the one they need. This fun front-loading lesson includes 10 short passages, a question trail, a final mystery word and a 4-digit code. Each card reveals a new code word.

If you’re looking for a unique way to teach your students about endangered animals, then this is perfect for you. You can hang the cards on the wall, scatter them on the floor, place them on desks, hide them or pass them amongst students. How you choose to set it up this activity is up to you. You may even have a few more ideas of ways to use these cards and recording sheets.

As stated earlier, the cards do not tell the students which card has the answer to the code word question, so they will revisit the endangered animals text multiple times practicing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills as they rotate around the room seeking text evidence. To ensure understanding of the subject matter, students will answer questions that can be found directly in the reading passages. No prior knowledge is needed.

You can have the students work in pairs (or individually) and race to complete 10 questions. A friendly competition always increases engagement. Students will read the text, answer 10 questions, unscramble a final mystery word and reveal a 4-digit code.

5. Place calling cards in a container and mix them up.
6. The caller draws a calling card and announces the bug image drawn. Players mark their cards accordingly.
