Students will research members of the Constitutional Convention who became framers of the Constitution. They will decide what was important to the different individuals who made up this group and tell if they were successful in their goals.

After studying the Alamo and the famous Texans associated with the battle at the Alamo, let your students practice their research skills and show off their creativity at the same time.

Before starting: Visit your public library and collect several juvenile non-fiction books about the Alamo and look at pictures of various historical marker sites discussing different ways that people and places were honored there.

To begin the project assign or have students randomly draw the name of a historical figure associated with the Alamo. Give students time to research and collect information for their project. The research about their person should include basic biographical information, life before the Alamo, and their significance at the Alamo. After collecting information, students should write a rough draft of the text for their historical marker and work with a peer to edit. The final copy should be completed in the shape of a historical marker plaque.

Finally, let students create some type of memorial to accompany the plaque. This could be a statue, a monument, an info board, a grave stone, a model of a building, etc. They can be limited only by their own imagination. Allow students to present their projects and invite parents to enjoy the fun as well!

With this editable and printable activity, engagement skyrockets as students learn about famous scientists of the past. I encourage my kiddos to dress up in period costume and present their learning as if they are the scientist they researched. There are options for the less bold of your students (hand puppets and dolls). Students and parents remember this project for years to come.

Exemplars are included to give your kids a place to start and to get their creative juices flowing. This project can be used for distance learning or in person. It can be easily assigned digitally or on paper. 

This assignment is aligned Common Core Writing & Next Generation, Middle Years Program and other International Science Process Skills and Research Standards.

The project is divided into fourteen sections, including the front pages. Sections include Language/Population, Habitat/Geography, Family Structure, Government, and several others. Each section has a list of criteria and questions that must be answered to complete the section.

I would expect a single student to take about ten weeks, with a weekly goal (perhaps a little faster) of completing one section.

There is a score for each section and teacher info on ways to make it work.

The project contains a cover sheet, a teacher's page, two student pages and a sheet to help students select an appropriate civilization.

There is also a list of civilizations that have an abundance of information available on line.

This resource is a 5th grade or 6th grade discussion based writing unit discussing who was the most influential Allied leader of World War II: Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin or Franklin Roosevelt. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students learning about World History or World War 2.

The first lesson involves students retrieving facts from informational texts about Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt, and typing these on to an included fact sheet. In the second lesson students need to use these facts to write three to four paragraphs about the individual Allied leaders. In the third lesson students need to use prompt sheets to write up an introduction and a conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before typing up their work using the template provided.

NO PREP is needed!

This activity is an online resource, that uses Google Slides, and is linked to your Google Drive. It can be completed by students online using tablets or computers. If you are unsure how to allow the students to have their own individual copy take a look at the instructional video below:

Scrappy Patchwork Quilts

A scrappy quilt uses a variety of different fabrics that may or may not use a consistent theme. In this new version of cut and paste, students will make a scrappy quilt using a variety of pattern blocks included in the activity. The students must complete a set of questions or activities to know what numbered pattern to use and where it should be placed on their quilt. Each quilt has its own color scheme (color chart) and those are the colors students will need to create a one-of-a-kind scrappy quilt. Each quilt comes with a header, and some have additional activities students must complete to finish their quilts. This lesson will have students critically explore what has been described as “one of the worst human rights crisis in the world”— referring to the camps located in the northwestern province of China, which are currently holding a million or more Uighur Muslims. The Chinese government disagrees with this portrayal, and has claimed that the camps are merely “re-education centers.” This lesson will have students analyze the validity of the two portrayals through the study of multiple sources.

The central investigative question is:

Are the camps in China “re-education centers” or are they “concentration camps”?
