Protestant Reformation Walk of Fame Project: 6th Grade Studies Weekly Week 26

Protestant Reformation Walk of Fame:
Students will create a Hollywood Star style Walk of Fame showcasing important reformers of the Protestant Reformation. They will randomly be assigned a reformer which they will research. Students can also answer follow up questions for increased rigor.
Students will decide what type of reformation in which their individual was involved: scientist, soldier, scholar, religious leader, or royalty. They will also determine five important facts concerning this reformer.
Creativity will be put on display with students choosing their star color and deciding how to write their information on their star.
Reformers include: John Wycliffe, Galileo, William Tyndale, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther, John Calvin, King Henry VIII, Queen Mary I, Queen Elizabeth I, Johannes Gutenberg.
Follow up questions increase rigor of this project.
This project aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard 6.H.9.

Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

Now, I am beginning a series, Let's Meet...people in the Middle Ages.This particular reading is on Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard was a Prophet, abbess, composer, religious leader, writer of the Middle Ages. Her play may be the FIRST known musical! Her writings are still read today. The short reading shares(in the first person) a recounting of the person's life(in this case Hildegard). There are several Did You Know? fun facts, comprehension questions, a map skill activity for the area of the world the person lived, a teacher's section with extension activities, the key and additional links.

Develops students research and summarising skills with online notes. first introduce the topic with a short focused slide deck on the topic on Medieval Europe History. I would suggest enlarging the document to A3.

A research task on the different claims to the English throne in 1066AD. Students access the website on the research sheet for the information as a starting point. They are required to produce an argument with evidence from their research.

Black Death: A Visit with Simon, A Victim of the Black Death(script)

Use this informative Reader's Theater Script to learn about the Black Death, a disease that killed almost 1/2 the population of Europe in its worst outbreak(1347-1351). The fun/informative play uses the format of Simon, a victim of the Black Death, being a guest on Ms. Bie Ografee's talk show and the studio audience asks questions about his experiences during the time(the medical beliefs, the causes, the effects the Black Death had on Europe, etc.
Great for a unit of study on the Middle Ages! Could be used in a science unit on bacteria and contagious diseases. Comprehension questions/extension activities, key.

Protestant Reformation Project (at school): 6th Grade Studies Weekly Week 26

The Reformation--but at school:
Students will bring the Reformation to their classroom with this activity. They will reflect on what they feel needs to be changed in their school community and what steps need to be taken to accomplish these changes.
This partner activity requires students to work cooperatively in order to be successful. They will also need to be creative and think outside the box.
Students will create their own list to place on the classroom door like Martin Luther placed on the church door during the Reformation.
This activity aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard 6.H.9.

Middle Ages Timeline Display Research and Sorting Activity

A great classroom display and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events, legends and famous figures of the Middle Ages. There are 33 posters or task cards that include many of the key events including the War of the Rose, the rule of Charlemagne, the feats of Joan of Arc, the Viking raids and the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
The posters look great as a display in the classroom and the cards are a brilliant introduction to the Middle Ages. The displays and cards come both with dates and without dates, so the students can research the dates online before sorting the timeline. The cards look even better when laminated.

The Bayeux Tapestry: A Reading Passage (Middle Ages)

One of the oldest lasting examples of graphic communication is the Bayeux Tapestry.It dates back to 1083. The short reading comes with comprehension questions, too.

In fact, the earliest drawing of a snowman was found in a book dating back to 1380! The book, “Book of Hours” was found in a library in the country of the Netherlands. Read about a famous sculptor hired to make a snowman, a snowman which helps predicts the weather in Switzerland and two more stories about snowmen!
