SEL Project: Students Create a Lesson

By Erin Cusumano

This project encourages students to choose an SEL topic of their own interest and create a presentation and activity as if they were delivering a lesson on it.

This project allows students to take the format of SEL lessons they've learned from and practice using it themselves to find, understand, and share information. This benefits individual students, as they can explore information of interest, and allows the educator to gauge what topics their students are curious about for future lessons.

If you have students present their lessons they also get practice talking about SEL topics and respectfully listening to peers do the same. I find this to be a great end of year project to wrap up SEL learning.

With presentations this project can be made to take up a whole week of SEL instruction (based on a 30-45 minute period a day). Day 1 students can hand in their topic and activity idea for teacher feedback, days 2-3 students can create the material, and day 4-5 students can present. Examples are simple for clarity and to suit a range of students, but expectations can be adjusted based on grade-level. This project includes a packet with clear instructions (with examples) and space for students to write their chosen topic and activity, an example slideshow, and two example activities that accompany the slideshow.

SPANISH SCATTEGORIES: ¡Páreme la mano!

By La Llama Bilingüe

Scattegories is a fun and challenging board game that tests your creativity and quick thinking. I have recreated a classroom version for SPANISH LEARNERS called: ¡PÁREME LA MANO! also called in other countries, TUTTI FRUTI o PARA EL FUEGO. This is a fun game we used to play in school growing up in South America. I have tried in my own classroom and kids LOVE IT! This is such a great game to practice vocabulary and parts of the speech.

This product contains two versions of this game. One for individual play and one for a group game. There are a set of rules for both games but these are just suggested rules as you can set your own depending of the group of kids you teach. Kids will only need a dice, a white board marker and a wiper.

Students will love this Jeopardy-like game to review Common Core standards. Categories include FUNCTIONS, NUMBER SYSTEMS, EXPRESSIONS & EQUATIONS, GEOMETRY, PROBABILITY & STATISTICS, AND VOCABULARY. FUNCTIONS: involve determining whether or not a graph or equation is a function, reading function, tables, graphs, and equations, and comparing functions.

NUMEBR SYSTEMS: in this category students determine whether or not a number is rational, find approximate values for irrational numbers, convert a repeating decimal to a fraction, and compare values of both rational and irrational numbers.

EXPRESSIONS & EQUATIONS: these problems have students use integer exponent properties, find the equation of a line, compare two values in scientific notation, and solve a system of equations with two equations (one solution).

GEOMETRY: questions involve finding missing angle measurements, finding the volume of a cylinder, and answering questions about transformations.

PROBABILITY & STATISTICS: students must read and understand scatter plots and double frequency tables. They must find the equation of a line of best fit, or a trend line.
