This career unit gives students an introduction to the law, public safety, corrections and security career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based project comic creation project is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. A quick reference/tutorial is also included for StoryboardThat (free, no download needed). Additionally, a group legal case analysis project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to simulate the career and allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

This lesson will have students critically explore a contentious current event issue involving the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. The lesson will invite students to examine the context and controversy that surrounds the two cases, although emphasis will be placed on the Eric Garner case. A thought-provoking Slide Presentation & accompanying handouts will prompt students to analyze a variety of news resources; all of which frame the issue in a particular way, and offer different explanations as to the underlying causal factors in Garner’s death.

In this zipped file, you will find the greatest tool I have used yet for the Supreme Court Cases that I have used in years. I simply took 6 manila folders and labeled them with the court case numbers (there are 6 court cases). I glued the court case summary on the right of the inside of the folder and made a pocket on the left with the folded up Supreme Court Decision inside. I number my students off 1-6 and split them up which makes it easy for photocopying with the court cases and the folders make the gallery walk/ learning stations last forever. This is also a great place to throw in some Kagan Structures. The Case Log is the only major photocopying you have to do, or you can have the students copy it down ahead of time. The students take on the role of the Supreme Court Justices as they complete the following as a group of Justices as they take notes, guess the outcome, and finally reveal the actual outcome of each case:

Board of Education, Gideon v. Wainwright, Miranda v. Arizona, in re Gault, Tinker v. Des Moines, Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, United States v. Nixon, and Bush v. Gore.

Background Knowledge: Students should have a working knowledge of trial, appellate, and supreme courts at the state and national levels. Students should understand the appellate process and the significance of judicial precedent, particularly with U.S. Supreme Court rulings. Students will delve into the fundamental aspects of a courtroom such as: the basic structure and lay-out of a courtroom, the function of different roles (judge, jury, defense, prosecutor), and the common procedures and language used in a courtroom environment. Students will also explore the importance of how to create an opening and closing statement, the legal grounds of when to object, and understand the dynamics of a direct and cross examination. Administrators always say to put the tracking in the students hands, make sure you are keeping data, and never offer ways to help you do these! Well, that's where I come in! I sat down with the test specs, essential standards, and standard break down sheet to create this awesome excel sheet that you could easily print, distribute, or put in a google sheet that your students can track THEMSELVES! Plus this is also a great tracker for PLC's to ensure all students are learning the content & you are on the same page. this has made our team meetings go SO much soother! This is my favorite tool in my classroom.

Students will track themselves unit by unit & standard by standard with the use of "I can" statements.

Instructions: Step By Step

1. Find the unit we are in right now.

2. Based on the work we have done thus far, please put an x in the box that best describes your knowledge of the "I can" statement.

3. Be sure to revisit this before your test to ensure that You've Got This Down! This is what the Civics team is creating your test off of. If you can move yourself to the final column of "Yes, I can." Then you should score 80% or higher on the test. I will be checking on these :)

4. If you get assigned to an intervention. You will need to edit this on the last day of that cycle

My website for teachers/kids has lots of geography activities, short reads, factoids on different topics, news, career surveys, bell ringers and more.

Engage your students in having them draw important connections between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and contemporary grassroots movements taking place in the United States. This lesson will prompt students to analyze short documentary video clips that focus on six different contemporary grassroots movements:

1) Women’s March

2) Immigration

3) Standing Rock

4) Black Lives Matter

5) Climate Change

6) Teacher Strikes

With the corresponding video clips, students will fill out a provided T-chart that will identify the following aspects of each movement:

1) Desired Outcome/Changes

2) Group(s) involved

3) Strategies

4) Obstacle/Challenges

5) Questions

Hands-on activities: Two relevant, critical thinking activities follow that involve having students take their prior knowledge of the Civil Rights era (1950/60’s) and;

1. Using a Venn diagram, students will compare this time period with current day grassroots movements.

2. Each group will then discuss what issues are relevant and meaningful for them. Students will choose an issue that they wish to see change, and then as a group, will create a poster that promotes their cause.

Time frame for lesson:

• 3-4 class periods (60 min) *If time is an issue; the teacher can choose from the six contemporary movements that he/she would like for their students to focus on.

Overview: Benchmark Clarifications: Students will use examples of historical law codes to identify how laws originated and developed in Western society. Students will be giving their opinions on a hypothetical case similar to the Tinker v Des Moines case of 1965. Students will apply their opinion than review what the current law or section of court case states. This activity brings in a review of both the excerpts of the Preamble to the Constitution and the First Amendment of the Constitution, as well as introducing and comparing the scenario to the actual court case of Tinker v Des Moines. Students get to formulate their own opinion and compare their opinions with the Justices of the Supreme Court at the time of the Tinker case. This activity is not only 3 pages long of awesomeness, it is also easily adaptable to a Kagan Structure, Cooperative Learning Groups, guided discussion, or independent work depending on the needs of your students, time frame, or requirements of your school. Scenario: The Case of the Blue Arm Bands at HMMS The students sued the school district for violating their First Amendment rights. A group of students in the schools after-school Civics Club at Harns Marsh Middle School were concerned about the United States’ involvement in the nuclear arms race. To show their support for peace and nuclear disarmament (reduction of weapons), they decided to attend school for one week wearing blue armbands. Hearing of the plan, and fearing that school would be disrupted, the principal, Dr. Luckey, made a rule against wearing armbands. In spite of the rule, some students came to school wearing armbands anyway. Dr. Luckey claimed that they broke school dress code. The students were given OSS (Out Of School Suspension) for 4 days. In return, the students and their parents sued the school district in federal court for violating their First Amendment rights.

Mesopotamia, means “Land between Two Rivers”.This area is called the cradle of civilization and is where archaeologists have found the remains of the oldest historic people(dating back around 3000BC)People called the Sumerians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Akkadians and Assyrians, all called the region of Mesopotamia home. These people left behind many ideas which we still have in our world today.
