CHINA GEOGRAPHY: ONE CHILD, TWO CHILD, THREE CHILD OR MORE, POPULATION POLICIES
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Your students will love this lesson, from 6th grade to 12th grade. The PowerPoint is included in the Zip File.
In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.
(To examine in depth the One-Child Policy Act of 1979 under Mao Zedong's leadership, click here.)
However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.
This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.
OBJECTIVES:
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
GROUP READING ACTIVITY: (15-20 MINUTES)

Coupon Binder -Teach your students or children the power of saving money
By Regina Frazier
Save lots of money while shopping using coupons. This colorful, cheerful binder organizes your coupons and makes it easier for you to find just the right coupon you are looking for while out shopping. Teach your students or children in your household the value of saving money by saving coupons. Create your own coupon binder by using baseball card holders that you can find at many dollar stores or office supply stores. You can either use a two inch or three inch binder to set it up and place all your dividers in. There are two coupon sorting sheets available. Rather than flipping through the pages in your binder to insert coupons which can take a lot of time, you can use the coupon sorting mats. Once the coupons are all sorted, you can then place them in your binder. Children of all ages can help with sorting the coupons. Many kids can also help out with gathering coupons and cutting them out. Have your students write about ways they can help their family save money. There are a couple of writing prompts that you could use to have your students share ways that they can help their families save money. This does not necessarily mean just using coupons. It could mean saving money by turning off the lights when not in use, not taking long showers, or turning in cans for redemption. Some kids might write about a job they do such as a paper route, mowing the grass or shoveling snow. Some students might choose to discuss buying items on sale at the store and not demanding expensive name brand items."Older students can work on the total amount of savings from using coupons. They can also work on figuring out percentages to show how much money is saved during each shopping trip and totals for each month. Supply/Demand Activity with Land Use Extension--5th grade Studies Weekly Week 14
By Colleen Burdette
Get students up and moving:
This activity gets students up to get or wait for crayons. All students are coloring a picture based on directions using a limited amount of crayons. The teacher brokers the use of crayons. Students will begin to understand the concept of supply and demand as they find the crayons they need are not available for their use and require them to wait. My students stuggledthe most with not sharing crayons with other students. Students can follow up with reflection questions that lead to a deeper level of knowledge.
An option extension explores the misunderstanding of land use that caused great difficulty between the Indigenous People and British Colonists. This extension demonstrates the Indigenous belief that the land couldn't be owned, just used and the British belief that land was to be owned, not just used. This optional part of the activity leads to interesting discussion. Students can follow up withe reflection questions that lead to a deeper level of knowledge.
These activities align with Indiana Social Studies standards 5.E.1, 5.E.5.
