Get students involved in the learning process through this lesson China's Historical One Child Policy: Creating a Population Density Cartogram. Students will not only learn about the cause and effect of China's One Child Policy of 1979, but will strengthen their knowledge of map creation and reading skills, specific to a cartogram.

Working in collaborative groups, team members will participate in a group reading activity an article on China’s 1979 One-Child Policy Act entitled Too Many In The Family. This article will address the history behind the law, the policy incentives, disobeying the policy, and expectations of the rule. Students to express their thoughts on the topic after the reading and use high-level thinking skills.

In addition, students will have fun collaborating, examining and learning how to read cartograms by creating their own cartogram that reflects the current population of China. This brings the past into the present. Students will need graph paper, colored pencils, a map, and a calculator for this activity.

While this lesson focuses on the original One-Child Policy Act of 1979, there have been additional child policy acts passed since 1979 — the first one being the 2015 Two-Child Policy Act, following the 2021 Three-Child Policy Act. In 1989, after the death of pro-reform Chinese Communist Party (CCP) general secretary Hu Yaobang in April 1989, a younger Chinese generation wanted changes in the government and to be heard. In response, the communist government enforced marshall law on the night of 3 June, deploying troops and military tanks to occupy the square in on the crowds of students and young adults who were peacefully protesting calling for greater accountability of the government, constitutional due process, democracy, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. China's communist government would get control of its citizens. This event has many names and is often referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the Tiananmen uprising. the June Fourth Incident, or '89 Democracy Movement.

This informative geography and civics lesson will take students on a journey into the events surrounding the Tiananmen Square Massacre and examine what government policies led to the devastating outcomes. Students will understand the similarities and differences in the constitutional and basic rights of those under communism versus democracy. The younger generation fought for more democratic rights while the communist government fought to keep its stronghold on the Chinese citizens.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will examine the theories behind Karl Marx's communism.

o The learner will identify the characteristics and political philosophy of Marxism.

o The learner will examine how Marxism played a vital role in communism.

o The learner will compare how communism is implemented and ruled in the four remaining communist countries of the 21st century.

o Students will be assigned a communist country and will apply the information learned and researched to determine whether communism is effective or ineffective.

MATERIALS:

o Technology to display the introductory videos

o Communism or Capitalism listening guide reproducible

o A tool to project the Communism or Capitalism listening guide on the board

o Who Was Karl Marx article reproducible (One per team of two)

o Communist Countries Cards reproducible

Although this lesson plan is written specifically for World History, character maps can be used at antime that you are studying a character or historical individual. In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
  Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
• Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
• Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
• Understand Population Density

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Reading Activity: One-Child Policy Act (1980), Two-Child Policy Act (2016), Three-Child Policy Act (2021)
