Fraction strips are used as a math manipulative and a more hands-on approach to teaching your students to visually see the value of each proper fraction to a whole.
By Homeschool with Big Easy Homeschooling Mom
These NO PREP fraction strips are a great math manipulative.
**How to Use:
**Fraction strips can be used to help students visualize fractions and perform operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Here are some ways to use fraction strips:
Find a common denominator
To find a common denominator, list the multiples of each number until you find a number that appears in both lists. For example, to find the common denominator for 1/2 and 1/5, you can list the multiples of 2 and 5, and 10 appears in both lists.
Compare fractions
Place fraction strips side by side to compare them. For example, fourths are equal to the whole strip when placed next to it.
Represent mixed fractions
To represent a mixed fraction, mark two strips on the fraction strip. The top strip should represent the whole number, and the bottom strip should represent its successor.
Divide fractions
Use fraction strips to create both the dividend and the divisor.
Understand fractions
Fraction strips help students understand that the same whole can be broken into different equal-size parts. They can also help students understand that a denominator of eight will have smaller pieces than a denominator of three.
What Educators and Parents are Saying:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Andrea G. March 30, 2024
This was a good lead-up for adding fractions. The visuals helped a lot.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Sunny Stars February 15, 2024
This resource is awesome! As a visual learner myself, I think it's important to have students to be able to not only "visualize" math, but also have time for hands-on experiences. I utilized this with my 2nd-grade students and had them cut apart each of the strips and glue them back onto a piece of construction paper. This allowed them to "see" the fraction and to grasp the concept!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Jessica Pardue January 16, 2024
High-quality free resource. We used it to compare and add unlike fractions. I really liked that there were 2 options in how the fraction strips were labeled. I was able to use it in different lessons. Thank you!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Teacher Mia December 17, 2023
My students were amazed! They learned well and enjoyed the process!! Keep up the great work, teacher, thank you for sharing amazing materials!
