Student's need to know they are valued and appreciated. One way to let them know is it to present them with certificates, whether you present it publicly, privately, staple it to their assignment being returned to them or, if they have a student folder or journal with pockets, simply place inside for them to find! This pack of 20 Social Skills Scenario Task Cards and Worksheets highlight real-life social scenarios and situations centered around APOLOGIZING and can be used to help young "kiddos" of all levels and abilities (in grades 2-4) to practice and build social skills. These highly relevant scenarios expose young learners to skills they need to interact with others effectively, forge positive relationships, improve social skills and behavior, and most importantly, build confidence in managing situations and apologizing when necessary.

WORKSHEETS

The Social Skills Scenario Worksheets contain the same scenarios in the Task Cards. There are two questions on each worksheet (for each scenario). Students are asked to read the scenario and think and write about how each person (in the scenario) should handle the situation/problem. It is important for students to consider both perspectives and determine how both individuals can appropriately respond to the situation presented. They are also asked the "why" question to help them reflect about why these actions are appropriate.

Here's an example:

Scenario:

During lunch time, you bump into Lily. She drops her lunch on the floor.

Questions:

1. What should you do or say to Lily in this situation?

2. How should Lily handle this situation and why?

TASK CARDS

The Task Cards come in 4 different formats: B&W with questions, B&W without questions, Brown with questions, and Brown without questions. You can print them out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate them. You may also organize them in a binder ring and use in small groups.

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

• Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

• Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skit for the class.

• Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.

• Discussion: Students can discuss the Social Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

One way to let them know is to present them with certificates, whether you present it publicly, privately, staple it to their assignment being returned to them or, if they have a student folder or journal with pockets, simply place it inside for them to find! Surprise! You are valued!

Each is created with a colorful background but can be reproduced in black and white as well. In addition, each has a inspiring quote such as the following:

• "Self belief and hard work will always earn you success.” – Virat Kohli
• “It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get back up.” – Vince Lombardi
• “If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

These rewards can be used various ways:

• Teacher presented, filled out by the teacher
• Peer presented, filled out by a peer, and presented
• Filled out by a student committee and presented

Students may appreciate the reward; however, you may choose to present them with the opportunity to receive a tangible reward along with the certificate

• A homework pass
• 10 free minutes at the end of class
• 5 extra credit point on their next test
• The choice to work with the partner of their choosing on their next class assignment or project

As the instructor, it is up to you what you feel is appropriate rewards for your students.

Use these reward certificates to let your students know they are valued and appreciated. Make sure everyone gets noticed and recognized! Try to give every student the same amount of praise; find something good in each student—event the most challenging.
