2nd Grade School Counseling Activities

Help your students eliminate stereotypes, prejudices, and any form of racism. Through this activity, children will be encouraged to recognize that skin color is merely a physical characteristic. By imagining themselves with different skin colors and drawing pictures of themselves accordingly, they will understand that despite external differences, all individuals are unique and equally valuable.

This activity promotes the idea that there should be no room for injustice or discrimination based on skin color.

It is our responsibility to foster equality and promote antiracism from an early age.

This activity serves as an excellent addition to the Racism (Skin Color) Anti-Racism PowerPoint Presentation.

Instructions:

Ask your students to draw themselves in the first picture frame. In the subsequent frames, instruct them to draw themselves again, but with a different skin color or tone. Afterward, children should cut out each picture and staple them together to create a small book. Finally, encourage them to share their picture book and reflect on their emotions and thoughts while looking at themselves depicted in different skin colors or tones. They will realize that they are the same and their worth does not change.

Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. This product includes 11 social story role-playing cards. For each card provided, students can write their answers independently, with a partner, or in small groups. Students will then be provided with a picture of each role-playing card where they will be required to role-play what is happening in the picture. There are also a variety of questions asked that relate with each role-playing card. At the end of the product, there are 11 picture cards that can be cut-out. Students can make up their own questions, role-play what is happening in the picture, discuss what is wrong about the picture card, write a story about the role-playing picture card that they are provided or choose, etc.
