2nd Grade French Activities

French Decodable Sentence Strips that align with the Science of Reading and current Modern Language Standards 1.0. The easy to use decoding and encoding strips can be used in the K-2 French classroom with little to no preparation.

Make a few copies of each card and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, encoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Students use whiteboard markers to sound out each sound in the word, each syllable, or each word in the sentence. What a great way to build confidence! Whatever way you choose to use this resource, I am so grateful that you have given this item a try!

Science of Reading:

These sentence strips are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven sentence strips on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple sentence strips to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Sentences are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Do you teach a foreign language to your students? This packet contains two center activities that help teach colors in English, Spanish and French! It is differentiated so that students who need more help can use the colored word cards and those who are more advanced can use the black and white cards. The first center activity, the students match the color name to the color splat on the color mats. There are color mats available in English, Spanish and French with word cards available with each color. Use Velcro on the word cards and the blank spaces to allow the word cards to stay in place. The second center activity is a matching/memory game where students pair the colored splat card with the correct color word. This center is also available in English, Spanish and French. This is a back to school French Second Language FSL art resource to help build a class community with students. Get to know your students as they write about themselves with this low prep activity. Students are also encourage to add color, symbols and sketches to these "Tout sur moi!" or "Me Voici" posters. This resource is great way to decorate your classroom or bulletin board.

Students delight in creating unique and funny sentence patterns using a 1-2-3 step strategy. Students use cards marked ’1’ to choose the subject of their sentence, cards with ‘2’ are the action words, and cards with location words are tagged ‘3’. Put together the subject, verb, and location cards and make a new sentence each time. Teaching writing in your Grade 1-3 French Immersion class has never been easier.

What to do:

Make a class set of the cards, laminate, and cut.

Place a few copies of the 1-2-3 writing template sheet into clear pockets or give students an individual worksheet to work on.

Watch students delight in creating new and unique sentences as they build confidence in their French writing skills.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a few copies of the template page, insert into clear pockets, dry erase pocket, or use as individual worksheets and watch as the giggles get started. Make a copy of the story cards, laminate, and cut. My students LOVE these activities. I cannot make them fast enough.

There is a little cutting and laminating involved with this activity but many use clear folders to make your job easier!

Perfect for a sub binder, emergency plans, or as a back up activity when you happen to have a few minutes to spare. A great set to have on hand as an extra centre activity at Xmas time. Your K-3 Immersion students will love them!

When to use this resource in the classroom:

These activity sheets are Christmas themed and can be used for the entire month of December and even into the week following Halloween. Students love using them and they can be helpful for follow-up assessment. Just in time for progress reporting period!

I hope your students enjoy learning their vowel sounds and exploring phonemic awareness with a Christmas Theme!

I use these activities in my French Immersion classroom with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students. I feel confident that they could be used for any grade from Grade One to Grade Three.

It is never too late to start routine language and can be a great visual for those on an IEP, those students who need a boost, and for peers to help others build their confidence with using these everyday questions.

I think this resource is perfect for French Immersion teachers like myself, for Core French teachers, and for language teachers who work in other countries. I happen to be in Ontario, Canada but these questions apply to any young learner. K-3 in the Immersion setting, Gr. 4-6 in Core French (and younger), and perfect for Homeschool students as well.

Daily routine language:

Students who are able to quickly master daily routine language feel confident to then try using less common words in class with teachers and peers. The secret to great communication is when students don’t even realize they are speaking to each other in French. This resource could set them on a path to natural, fluid speaking with confidence!

The theme of this French writing prompt unit is "Si j'avais trois souhaits . . ." This five day French writing program is suitable for immersion and core programs. The unit includes five pre-writing and writing activities for a whole week. These writing prompts are a great way both to introduce and to review writing in French.
