These graphic organizers require students to analyze three images related to the Great Depression and Dust Bowl and draw evidence-based conclusions. The differentiated version graphic organizer includes scaffolding questions to help lower level students analyze the images and write about them. The graphic organizers also require students to cite evidence from the images to support their analysis/conclusions. The graphic organizers are visually appealing and eye catching!

These graphic organizers are excellent for Do Now, unit launch, groupwork, homework, independent work, and/or research activities. This close read focus' in on "Children for the Colony of Jamestown". This gives guided questions, time to reflect and digs into the vocab. This is a great way to incorporate Marzano strategies alongside ELA annotated text strategies to increase gains by 35%. If your students are struggling with close reading or are still using highlighters (and highlighting the ENTIRE page), this will be extremely helpful. However, this will be useful even if they are old pros at annotating. Students will not only learn how to annotate and read deeply, they will also learn what information to look for depending on the genre. Teaching students how to read closely empowers them to become independent learners, and the importance of reading closely becomes clear in the first two words of the Common Core K-12 Anchor Standards: *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. The step-by-step process is effective. It includes a gradual release of responsibility, which gives students confidence, as well as practice. Step 1: Teacher directs/models. Step 2: Students collaborate. Step 3: Independent practice. Annotating text can be amazing for students who have problems focusing and paying attention. Annotating keeps students focused, because it requires them to stay actively involved with the text. Annotating makes it difficult for students to drift off. It also enables the teacher to easily monitor attention issues and reading progress, by checking on the student’s annotations.

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

Understanding the Four Economic Industries + Community Service Project

This cooperative learning economics industry and factor of production lesson addresses the four economic industries: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and quaternary Industries. A nation's economy can be divided into various sectors. Understanding these is important in understanding how our nation's economy works. Your students will have fun learning a lot about these industries!

A community service project is incorporated into this lesson. Students bring in food items such as cereal, canned goods, or anything that can be donated to a community food pantry. Make arrangements with the local food pantry to drop off or pick up the items. The items will be used for the lesson.

Students will use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate how a product can begin in a Primary Industry and end up in the Quaternary Industry, and how each industry can play a vital part in how products are made and distributed.

This lesson includes:

Students read two Common Lit articles and observe/analyze images related to the Great Depression and Migrant workers (Links to all images and articles are provided - actual articles are NOT included. only links).

Students will observe, read, analyze, and make evidence-based inferences related to the Great Depression and the lives of migrant workers. Students will then use these texts (articles and images) to make connections to the characters / events in the book Of Mice and Men. The graphic organizers require students to cite evidence from both the articles, images, and the book to support their analysis, conclusions, and observations.

✅ The two graphic organizers contain the same information, but one of them is differentiated for lower-level students.

✅ The differentiated version graphic organizer includes paraphrased, step-by-step instructions as well as examples of how to think about the information they observed in the images and read in the articles.
