  • Differentiated Learning: Suitable for learners of different proficiency levels, with options for scaffolded or extension activities.

How to Use:

(See embedded video in slide as well.)

Bell Ringers - Daily Journals for French class.

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Day 2:

  3. Print, copy, and have them ready for students as they walk in.

  4. Saving on paper? Copy machine never works? Download the slide as a png and have students write on them on a touchscreen device or their own papers. My students use the app Chrome Canvas on their Chromebooks. I loan styluses to students during class. They aren’t too expensive. Some students just write with their fingers. (Please see my terms of use for using digital downloads.)

  5. Day 2: Discuss the responses as a class. If you need to repeat Day 1 for the talking part for a few days, that’s okay. They will get it.

  6. Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.

  7. Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.

  8. Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually.

  9. Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.

  10. Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc. in all of their stories.

  11. Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.

  12. Student A: Je me sens triste.

  13. Student B: Elle dit, «Je me sens triste.» or «Elle se sent triste.»

For Conversation:

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Every day: Start with the journal at the beginning of each period. I usually do this for a few weeks. It will help with the conversation cards.

  3. Day 2: Discuss the responses as a class.

  4. Scaffold - Gradually, have students talk without the aid of the journal. I generally let students use their journals for 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the level, before having them talk without their work in front of them.

  5. Slide 13 - Ask, Ask, Trade- Each student gets a card and switches cards throughout the activity to practice various types of weather..

  6. Student A: «Comment est-ce que tu te sens?» (Or teach the formal «Comment est-ce que vous vous sentez?» (This could be on the board in front  so students can refer back to it as they learn it.)

  7. Student B (who has a happy face): , “Je me sens heureux.” or “heureuse.”  Then Student B asks: “Comment est-ce que tu te sens?”

  8. Student A (who has a sad card): “Je me sens triste.”

  9. Students A and B exchange cards and find new partners.

  10. During Ask, Ask, Trade- After students have had more practice with the cards, have them tell new partners what previous partners said. (Ex: Je me sens triste mais Sarah se sens grincheuse.)

  11. Win, Lose, or Draw: Draw a conversation card from a pile. Draw it on the board and class guesses. Students or the teacher can draw.

  12. Aïe! Game Instructions are included when slides are in “edit” mode.

French Relative Pronouns QUE - QUI - OÙ - DONT Challenge Task Cards Activity

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

This is a set of 140 French relative pronouns practice cards focusing on QUI - QUE - OÙ - DONT. These cards are so much more fun (and challenging) than classic worksheets. There's lots of repetition, and that's what our students need to practice and master these confusing relative pronouns. My students find it particularly fun to use these cards as a guessing game with a partner or small group, and even the mysterious DONT becomes a lot easier! Check out my QUI - QUE - OÙ - DONT Resource Bundle.

Each card displays an image, and beneath the image it is written how to say it in French. For example, C'est un lave-vaisselle. Students are prompted to say at least two sentences using relative pronouns to describe the image, and their partner(s) have to guess what it is. At the top of the card it may say C'est quelque chose que..... or C'est quelque chose dont..... and at the bottom of the card it may say C'est quelque chose où..... or C'est quelque chose qui..... Students have to finish the sentences using correct grammar, and they need to give enough information for their partner to make an intelligent guess.

In the beginning, it can be very difficult for students to formulate their own sentences, and that's why there are two sets of 70 cards included with this resource.

SET ONE: The cards have two clues already written on them. This is a nice way for students to warm up to the activity, understand how it works, and get in some valuable practice and examples. In this version, students read the clues to their partner(s) and soak in the grammar while their peers practice their listening skills.

SET TWO: These are the same cards, but the clues are not written on them. Students will have already practiced with SET ONE, and should be able to come up with their own sentences (and if they remember the ones from SET ONE... all the better)! The only clues they are given is whether they should follow the prompt with a subject or verb since those rules can be tricky and hard to remember.

These practice cards provide a quick NO PREP activity that you can use for years to come. You have the option of printing and cutting out the cards (4 per page - laminate if possible) or having students use the PDF file on their devices (1 per page).

Included:

70 numbered practice cards with clues - 4 per page for printing and cutting out

70 numbered practice cards with clues - 1 per page for projecting or online use

70 numbered practice cards without clues - 4 per page for printing and cutting out

70 numbered practice cards without clues - 1 per page for projecting or online use

Thirteen pages have four verbs each and space for taking notes and writing examples.

Seven pages have eight verbs each. Students write the meaning of each verb in English.

Three conjugation pages are formatted for quick written or spoken auto-évaluations.

French Present Tense Review Task Cards Speaking Activity

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

These 30 questions are just right for students who need to practice the PRESENT TENSE, and they are a perfect no prep speaking activity for busy teachers. Each EST-CE QUE question uses the TU form with verbs in the present tense. In addition to regular and irregular -ER, -IR and -RE verbs I've also included many irregular verbs.

In order to avoid OUI and NON answers, each question also includes an interrogative word which is great practice in helping to remember what they mean and where they're placed in the sentence.

This resource is part of my French 1 & 2 curriculum bundle

Since all of the questions are asked in the TU form, all of the answers will be in the first person singular. This is so that students can really focus and get used to using these verbs when talking about themselves and when talking to a friend.

Just cut out the 30 cards, punch holes in the spaces provided and attach the stack of cards with a key ring. It would be a great idea to print on card stock and laminate the cards before punching holes and attaching them. Super easy and no prep for years to come. Both black and white and color versions are included as well as a 2 page print out of the questions if you should decide to use them as a quiz or homework assignment.

Repetition is key in learning a language, and that's why I've created many different versions of these speaking cards. All of the cards ask the same basic questions, but each time in a different tense. My students really appreciate the familiarity of the cards even when learning a new tense.

Check out the other versions:

  • Futur proche speaking task cards
  • Futur simple speaking task cards
  • Passé Composé Speaking Task Cards
  • French Speaking Questions Task Cards - Present Tense

French Imperfect and Passé Composé Challenge Task Cards Activity

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

This is a set of 30 French IMPERFECT vs.PASSÉ COMPOSÉ task cards that you can use in a number of ways with your students. There are three types of task cards (see preview): - Write the verb in parentheses in the imperfect tense - Write the verb in parentheses in the passé composé - Decide which sentence is correct, the one in the imperfect or the one in the PC These cards offer an excellent opportunity to see the many ways in which we can use the passé composé as opposed to the imparfait. An answer key is provided. ⇒This resource is included in my French 2 grammar, vocabulary, task cards, games and activities GROWING BUNDLE

If you look in the upper left corner you'll see a space where you can neatly punch a hole in each card and then connect them with a keyring.
