Competitive game to build the Roman Republic:

Students will compete against each other to create the hierarchy of the Roman Republic. The pyramid of the hierarchy is completed when it is topped by Julius Caesar and the student announces "dictator".

This game is great for competitive students as everyone plays at the same time. It is best played in small groups. It can be used as a center as the game can be played over and over.

The linked Google Slide Presentation which gives examples and directions also describes an extension. This extension explores the shift in power which gave plebeians more power, but not the vote.

This activity aligns with Indiana Academic Social Studies Standard 6.C.1.

This game is specifically written for "Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia", however; it is easy to modify in order to use in social studies, science, math, language arts, and many other content areas. Save the game sheet to word, and use it over and over again throughout the year simply by changing the questions to the content you are studying. Students will not realize that they are reviewing because it is fun for all. Encourages all students to be engaged. Modification of this activity will require typing and teacher-made study questions but can be used for years and years to come.

Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work, starting a new ancient history topic, team-building activities or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Julius Caesar and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 25 timeline task cards before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 25 timeline task cards before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.
