When October comes around, we all start seeing pumpkins and signs of Halloween. Carving pumpkins to make jack-o’-lanterns is a traditional Halloween activity. Do your students know the history of why pumpkins are carved?

This resource gives a brief history of where the tradition of jack-o’-lanterns comes from. After reading the brief article, there is a short question worksheet to be completed. The worksheet asked questions based on information in the article and includes an area for students to draw their own jack-o’-lantern face.

This is a set of 4 Problem and Solution Nonfiction Passages with Graphic Organizers and Written Response Questions. It is designed for students in grade 4, 5 and 6 to help them improve their reading comprehension skills and learn how to identify the problem and solution in nonfiction texts.

Introduce young learners to the meaning of the Believer's Baptism with a Biblically based read aloud lesson book, mini student book and thought provoking discussion questions. If they are ready to be baptized themselves, this resource also provides them with the opportunity to write their own personal testimony and receive a commemorative certificate to remember the ay they got baptized.

This resource is an introduction to natural disasters. It contains five informational reading passages about natural disasters. It was made for the NGSS 3-ESS3-1 and 4-ESS3-2 Earth and Human Activity Standards. It covers the following

natural disasters:

Earthquakes

Floods

Hurricanes

Tornadoes

Volcanoes

The passages were written with third graders in mind, but the information is very interesting and complex and would be useful for upper grades as well.

There is a tips sheet for teachers and two recording sheetsfor students. One recording sheet is a graphic organizer for students to fill in as they read. The other one asks them to draw and label the natural disaster they have studied.

These are great to use with the whole class, in small groups, with partners, and even at centers!

There is a bonus mini-poster on natural disasters as well.

• Part I. The Artist as a Young Man: This section features photographs of Fitzgerald from his childhood in Minnesota, his college years at Princeton, his military training at Camp Sheridan, and his romantic courtship of Zelda Sayre in Montgomery, Alabama. The Characters as Readers: This section will not only prepare students to catch the literary allusions in The Great Gatsby but will get students thinking about what the books that various characters are reading might reveal about their personalities. What does his interest in Horatio Alger's rags-to-riches novels reveal about the character of Jay Gatsby? What does his interest in Lothrop Stoddard's The Rising Tide of Color reveal about the racist and xenophobic views of Tom Buchanan? (7 slides)

• Part IV. Drafting The Great Gatsby: This section features photographs of the mansions and parties that Scott and Zelda attended on Long Island in 1923. It also features Fitzgerald's handwritten drafts of the first and last pages of his novel, a list of the six titles that Fitzgerald rejected (plus the title he actually preferred but requested after the book had gone to print), and the painting by Fancis Cugat that Fitzgerald selected for the cover of The Great Gatsby. Sunrise/Sunset/Earth’s Axis/Seasons/Shadows/Tilt  Scavenger Hunt 

Hi fellow teachers

I often do scavenger hunts in grade 4 to 7  classrooms. I find them particularly useful when I’m feeling tired or lacking energy (hey, we’ve all been there).

Why do I like them?

1. They are easy to set up, 
2. The students get to move around
3. The students are focussed & engaged
4. The students enjoy it 
5. The teacher is free to take notes, observe and give guidance, if necessary. 

It can look chaotic, but if observed you can see students really trying, really reading the information, and really collaborating and cooperating.

How it works:

There are two components:

1. A two page worksheet (print double-sided, one per student)
2. 12 informational panels that contain the answers to the questions (these need to be printed on one side, cut in half and pinned in various locations around your room).
3. Hand out the worksheet and off they go!

My students are currently doing this very activity as I write!

The whole activity takes about 40 minutes and I might suggest watching a couple of Youtube videos on the topic to ‘get them in the mood.
