This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Frank is a squirrel, and he's hungry. And while his refrigerator is full, it doesn't have his favorite food - bread! How can he fill his stomach? Can his friends help him? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • ein Brot

  • Er hat Hunger

  • Er sucht

  • es nur

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and an animated mp4 version. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just over 5 minutes long, with pause time for students to read the text. There is a second version of the video with only the illustrations - no text - so you can watch it and do story retells. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

Here’s what you’ll get in this German Comprehensible Input Lesson:

• Links to the videos both with and without the text

• A printable pdf version of the story

• Comprehension question worksheet

• "Who said it?" worksheet

Schiffe versenken German Verb Conjugation Battleship

By Miss Clever Cookie

My favourite game to practice German verb conjugations (schwache, starke, trennbare, reflexive, Misch-, Modalverben, Verben auf -eln und -ern**.** It can be used in any tense. No prep, just PRINT AND GO.

This is my go-to game when I need to drill some grammar into my students. It's by far the most efficient grammar game. I love it because it's so easy to use. And my students love it because it doesn't feel like learning when, in fact, they do a TON of learning. We can easily spend the whole lesson playing battleship and they want to keep on playing even after the bell rings.

It's also a great activity for substitute lessons or when I'm in a time press and don't have much time to prepare for a lesson.

How to play:

  • It can be played in pairs or in small teams
  • Hide your ships in the left field. They mustn't touch.
  • Form sentences in order to "hit" the enemy ships in the right field.
  • If your enemy hits your ship, indicate that in the left field. If you hit your enemy's ship, mark it down in the right field. If you miss, mark it down as well. If you hit your enemy's ship, have another go.
  • To win, sink all of your enemy's ships before he sinks yours.

Contains:

  • detailed instructions + picture instructions
  • 9 battleship sheets, each covering different grammar
  • each sheet contains simplified instructions

The 9 sheets focus on:

  1. schwache Verben - weak verbs
  2. starke Verben - strong verbs
  3. Verben auf -eln und -ern - verbs ending in -eln and -ern
  4. trennbare Verben - separable verbs
  5. reflexive Verben mit Akkusativ - reflexive verbs accusative
  6. reflexive Verben mit Dativ - reflexive verbs dativ
  7. Modalverben + wissen - modal verbs and the verb wissen
  8. Mischverben - mixed verbs
  9. and as a BONUS ein und kein im Akkusativ - ein and kein in accusative

German forehead guessing vocabulary game

This forehead guessing game is very simple. It includes 55 cards with pictograms representing an object, an action or an animal. This version is a mishmash of themes. Perfect for traditional German classrooms or for immersion.

How to play:

From 2 to 10 players. Make two or more teams, the team with the youngest player starts the game.

Draw a card and without looking at it, show it to other members of your team. If possible, place it on his forehead with an adhesive. The other members of the team answer only by "YES", "NO" or "SOMETIMES" or another word that can guide his or her teammates. No gestures or noises are allowed. For example, if the card shows a dog,  the player will have to ask several questions to be able to know what is on his card.

“Does this animal live in water”? No

“Does it eat meat”? Yes

The team scores a point if the word is guessed. The team that reaches 10, 15 or 20 points has won !!

Stefan loves his red pants, but all of the other kids laugh at him when he wears them. So he tries other pants - but they still laugh. Could the problem be something other than his questionable fashion choices? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • Er zieht sich

  • hässlich

  • versteht nicht

  • im Ausverkauf

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and an animated mp4 version. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just over 5 minutes long, with pause time for students to read the text. There is a second version of the video with only the illustrations - no text - so you can watch it and do story retells. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

• Links to the videos both with and without the text

• A printable pdf version of the story
