9th Grade Phonics Resources

Flashcards that were created for our English-Arabic learners containing commonly used classroom objects (tools). It has the English word - picture depicting the word - Arabic word - English phonetic pronunciation of Arabic word. This set was designed to facilitate communication between the teacher and Arabic students and to teach school tools Arabic name's to English students.

I'm open to suggestions about other words to add to this set.

INSTRUCTIONS:

☻Print & Prepare

• print out the octagons, print the front and the back of the card double-sidedly on one sheet of paper
• NOTE: some home printers do not align (the paper isn’t fed into the printer straight) - SOLUTION - print the cards on 2 separate pages, cut them up and put them back to back
• cut them up
• laminate them to make them last longer

☻Play

• students use clothes pegs / paper clips / markers to mark all the words that contain the given phoneme
• to check, they flip the card - the correct answers are marked with a grey circle
• there are 4 - 5 correct answers per card
• sounds typical for British English (RP) are marked with BrEng
• sounds typical for American English are marked with AmEng
• the line at the bottom of each phoneme helps students orient it correctly for reading

This product will allow your students to easily understand and analyze Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 by breaking it down line-by-line!

Instruct your students to fold the paper in half the long way, and to cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps, and analysis question inside.

As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the sonnet for theme, gist, figurative language, characterization, and tone.

• place the bugs on the floor (facing up) and the sentence cards in a pile beside the bugs (facing down)
• students take turns flipping over a sentence card and swatting the bug with the corresponding ending
• then they read the sentence on the card

PAIR ACTIVITY:

• each student in the pair has their own fly swatter
• a teacher / helper or a fellow student flips over a sentence card
• the first student to swat the correct bug gets a point
• then they read the sentence on the card

TEAM GAME:

• the students form 2 lines (team A and team B)
• the first student at the front of each line gets a fly swatter
• the teacher flips a sentence card
• the first student to swat the correct bug wins a point for their team
• then he / she reads the sentence
• they hand over the fly swatters to those second in line and go to the back of the line

EXTENSION ACTIVITY

• students mix up the sentence cards and then work together to place them under the correct bug
