Are you math teacher and have been thrown into teaching a computer science course? Now you have NO IDEA where to start! Have you taught computer science, but want to try something else? Math and computer science are related, but are not the same!

I have your back. I've been teaching math and computer science, including APCSP, APCSA, and Data Structures for almost two decades. I also teach an introduction course. This is part of the course I made up for my intro students. I have a BS in computer science and know what students need to know.

This is part 6 of an introductory Programming in Java course. These lessons are meant to be done over a few days; the idea is to get students doing cool stuff as fast as possible. With Java, that is NOT an easy task.

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students reflect on their learning for the year using a set of prompts and creating a video using Canva (free, online software). A tutorial is included for the project, along with student expectations, instructions, prompts, and a grading rubric. This is a great way to let students reflect on their learning for the year and to share memories.

It was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used equally as well in high school classes.

Materials Required:

· Computers with Internet access for each student (or pair of students)

· Software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs

Geographical web quest which introduces kids to the continent of Antarctica. There are 10 web quests(with lots of information in the questions), 14 Did You Know? facts, comprehension questions(including several "thought question"), a teacher page with a number of extension activities, additional links and key. Scratch is a really easy to learn language to learn which makes it perfect for beginners. Block based coding looks very simple at first, but it is just as intricate as a keyed language. The difference is that coders don't need to memorize complex syntax to use it. This makes it perfect for younger kids; but it's still complex enough for older students.
