How to use the transportation flash cards effectively?

• Introduction: Start by introducing the concept of transportation to the child. Explain that transportation involves various ways people and goods move from one place to another.
• Flashcard Identification: Show the child a transportation flashcard and ask them to identify the mode of transportation. Encourage them to say the name of the vehicle or mode of transport shown on the card.
• Classification: Sort the flashcards into categories. You can use the pages of land transportation, water transportation, and air transportation. Ask the child to place each flashcard in the appropriate category, helping them understand the different types of transportation.
• Vocabulary Building: Use flashcards as a vocabulary-building exercise. Ask the child to describe the vehicle or mode of transportation, including its color, size, and any unique features. This can help expand their language skills.
• Real-Life Connection: Relate the flashcards to the child's own experiences. Ask questions like, "Have you ever been on a train?" or "What kind of transportation do we use when we go to the park?"

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE SORTING ACTIVITY (AND STICKY NOTE SORT):

This differentiated activity for figurative language includes hyperboles, metaphors, similes, puns, proverbs/adages, idioms, onomatopoeia, personification, and alliteration.

There are over 200 figures of speech that can be categorized in each area. Created for 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade, this activity is perfect for individuals, pairs, small groups, or the whole class.

DIFFERENTIATION:

• There are full color cards and category toppers for students who are new to figures of speech (or for ESL students who are learning the language). Each figure of speech is color coded (all idioms are green, for example).
• The black and white cards and category toppers are designed for students who are familiar with figures of speech, but need practice.
• The answer sheets are also differentiated.

You can choose to:

• allow students to do the activity without an answer sheet
• use the answer sheet that simply requires students to write the number of each figure of speech next to the correct category
• use the answer sheet that also requires students to provide evidence for their choice
