WHAT'S INCLUDED

It can be difficult to remember all that's going on with the plot, and to not disrupt the reading when new words pass our view, so I've created a template for readers who like to notate their reading. Where is the present? This Christmas sight word game is great for students who are practicing sight word recognition and beginning reading skills. This game can be used in a pocket chart or on a table top for an early education classroom.

What is Included:

How to Play:

Where's the Present is a game for centers or whole group instruction where a present is hidden behind a Christmas tree. A poem is chanted where the student(s) must say the sight word they think the present is behind. Once guessed, the sight word is removed. If the present is behind the Christmas tree, then the present must be hidden again to play further. If the present is not behind the Christmas tree, then the poem is chanted again with a new sight word.

3 Little Pigs with a twist- Part of my first story of my Bilingual Series

These helpful cards are essential to providing every student with a silent reading book at all times! Whether you use the AR program or not, you realize that, as a language arts teacher, it is critical that students use their free time to read. There is nothing worse than having a child say, “I don’t have a book.” as an excuse to waste time. Possibly, the school library is not regularly scheduled for students, or they do not have a regular opportunity to visit the public library.

It had been mandatory in my classroom for all students to have a silent reading book at all times. When they would be nearing the end of a book or were unsure what book they wanted to read next, they would fill out a card and leave it on my desk. When I had the opportunity, I would look in my own classroom library and “hand pick” a book for them. students began to enjoy leaving me the book request because the books I would provide for them were completely suitable and of their genre interest. It saved All of us a lot of time! Students in my building had very limited access to the school library, and I truly enjoyed picking out very good literature for each student individually.

Have a pile of these small AR book request card handy for students to use throughout the day.…these cards are a lifesaver.

Inferencing activity that could be done as a whole group activity or as part of literacy stations. This is a quick and ready to go activity. This set has 12 events that students makes inferences as to what happened. I have included a set of "answers" based on the ones I have used with my class. Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions). RL.4.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology.

I used this resource with one of my guided reading groups. They completed the packet as they read the story "One Day in the Prairie" By Jean Craighead George. If they finished they could choose from the extra activities.

~ The One Hundredth Day of School! is a great book to connect with the 100th day of school. Guided reading groups will enjoy making connections to their own projects, activities, classroom and school. The 10 page packet can easily be differentiated. ~Questions are based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and use higher level thinking skills. Students also think beyond the text to respond to many questions. Many questions elicit story recall responses. ~Included in the unit: -comprehension questions for each chapter -Ready, Freddy game – focus on characters and their actions ~ When I use this unit with one of my guided reading groups, the unit can last from a week to two weeks depending on how often the group meets. My guided reading groups also set their own expectations/assignments for completing their books. Sometimes students work with partner to complete assigned chapters. ~The game provides a wonderful review for the students. ~ The One Hundredth Day of School! is an AR level 3.0 book.

About the Book

This rhyming story tells of a group of animals, monsters, and witches, who prepare such a frightening Halloween party that their expected trick-or-treaters all run away.

There are two versions included. The only difference between the versions is the number of parts. One version has roles for three students, the other version has roles for four students. Each version is 3 pages.

These bookmarks were designed to be used with literature discussion groups but can be used with any book. There are three different versions. Print on cardstock for a longer-lasting bookmark and cut in half.

Then, use small sticky notes on top of each symbol. Students can draw each of the symbols on the sticky notes. As they read, they will place the sticky notes in their books.

You can regroup after reading and use the sticky notes to lead your discussion about the chapter or book.
