French Spiral Review Activity - French Pronouns and Verbs in 3 Tenses

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

This particular activity is different to many French TPRS circling activities because it doesn't tell a story. Instead, this activity focuses on French verbs, the pronouns LE - LA - LES - LUI - LEUR - Y - EN, possessive adjectives, and other less frequently used words that students will acquire through meaningful repetition. Each series of sentences is spoken in the present, passé composé, and futur proche tenses, and different forms of negation are included. Read on to see how you can easily differentiate this activity by using video, audio, and practice cards. Have a look at the video preview to see this activity in action!

Research reveals that language learners need MANY repetitions of grammatical structures in order to truly acquire them. By using the circling method, familiarity with the word or phrase is done through repetitive questions circling around the target language.

Here's how it works:

  • I speak a sentence: Le chien ne veut pas de ses croquettes. Il n'en veut pas.
  • I tell students to restate the sentence using a different subject pronoun: Les chats
  • Students restate the sentence making necessary changes: Les chats ne veulent pas de leurs croquettes. Les chats n'en veulent pas.

Included:

  1. Full length downloadable video circling activity - 362 slides - 53 minutes
  2. Full length downloadable audio circling activity - 53 minutes
  3. Practice cards for online use to work on reading and writing - 360 cards

Step 1: Watch the video lesson / activity to learn about the circling method. Students will quickly catch on, and will truly need to concentrate so that they can make the necessary changes in their sentences. Do your students ever tell you that they can understand what's being said, but can't think fast enough to make the necessary changes when responding? That's exactly why you should have them try out circling!

Step 2: Once they've watched the video and have done the exercise while reading along, try out the audio only version! This will be a challenge as they will not be able to see the words, and it will help with listening and speaking skills.

Step 3: Use the set of cards to practice reading and writing. Read the cards that I have spoken in steps 1 and 2, and have students take the time to write their responses before looking at the answer cards. As the cards are not numbered, I encourage you to download them and use them online rather than printing.

Vouloir Pouvoir Savoir French Dictée Activity Beginners Listening Comprehension

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Are you looking for a French dictée - dictation exercise about les études, le travail, les langues et la nationalité for your beginner level students? Do you struggle to find themed dictées that match beginner level French grammar?

Dictées are great activities for building listening comprehension and writing skills. This is a beginner level French dictée about studying, work, languages, and nationalities.

Included:

  • Eight sentences
  • Theme - Les études, le travail, les langues et la nationalité
  • Basic grammar
  • Present tense - être, savoir, vouloir, utiliser, pouvoir, avoir
  • Infinitives - parler, travailler, faire
  • Passé composé - finir, étudier
  • Definite, indefinite, and partitive articles

Included:

➯ Video presentation of the dictée. Watch me and listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. Many non-natives find it makes the listening comprehension part of dictation exercises more manageable to see the speaker's mouth. Once I've finished reading the dictation, I will present each written sentence in French along with the English translation. Once we've gone through all of the sentences and students have checked their work, I will present the complete text in paragraph form on the screen. At that time, we can slowly read through the complete text together so they can see how the separate sentences actually form a short story.

➯ Audio presentation of the dictée. Listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. This version of the exercise will be more challenging as students will not see the speaker's mouth.

➯ PDF of the numbered sentences in the dictée and the English translation.

➯ Numbered student response sheet. This is located on page 2 of the PDF.

➯ The following dictées are included in Bundled Set 1:

  • Présenter quelqu'un
  • Pays, langue, nationalité
  • Situer un objet
  • Décrire une personne
  • Décrire un lieu d'habitation
  • Dans la rue
  • À l'hôtel
  • Les heures
  • La semaine
  • La routine  - Verbes réfléchis

➯ The following dictées are included in Bundled Set 2:

  • La nourriture
  • Passé composé avec avoir
  • Passé composé avec être
  • Interdictions et devoirs
  • Savoir, pouvoir, vouloir
  • Pronoms directs et indirects
  • L'entretien
  • Avantages et inconvénients
  • Passé composé des verbes réfléchis
  • Parler de son enfance

"Dictation is the transcription of spoken text: one person who is "dictating" speaks and another who is "taking dictation" writes down the words as they are spoken. Among speakers of several languages, dictation is used as a test of language skill, similar to spelling bees in the English-speaking world."

Dictées are great activities for building listening comprehension and writing skills. This is a beginner level French dictée about preparing for an interview - se préparer pour un entretien.

Included:

  • Five sentences
  • Theme - Se préparer pour un entretien
  • Basic grammar
  • Il faut + infinitive is used 5 times
  • Infinitives - prendre, préparer, se renseigner, analyser, regarder, écouter, répondre, poser, faire, avoir
  • Direct object pronoun LA
  • Indirect object pronoun LUI

Advanced French Translation Challenge #9 - Video + PowerPoint

My series of Advanced French Translation Challenges is for intermediate through advanced level learners. Practically every grammar topic in my complete series which is available as a bundle. Note that I made these videos for my students, so I may make references to lessons that your students may not have learned.

The video is 11 minutes long, giving time for you or students to put the video on pause and to work on translations before going over them. I provide LOTS of grammar explanations. The video includes two substantial translations, English to French. You may choose to work on only one per session. I've included a PowerPoint version if you would rather not use the video and work through the translations with your students on your own.

Grammar highlighted in this resource:

  • supposer que
  • futur simple
  • futur antérieur
  • une fois que
  • negation
  • ancien
  • imperfect
  • passé composé
  • present conditional
  • indirect object pronouns
  • pronoun Y

The grammar topics are quite varied, because this is what happens in real French conversations. I frequently do translation work with my students, and they really appreciate the variety of material that is covered.

Every sentence includes the grammar that your advanced students have been working so hard to master. When translating, it's interesting to compare sentence structure. This is an opportunity to observe sentences that students would really say, and to figure out how to do that in French.

This resource is included in my Advanced French Curriculum Bundle.
