This reading passage examines the short story of a boy who becomes involved in a fight with a classmate. Reading Passage Overview - "Becoming Ruby"

This reading passage is about Ruby, a high school senior dealing with insecurity and negative body image. Fearing that her best friend Kaya might leave her for more popular, thinner girls, Ruby drastically changes her appearance in an attempt to fit in. However, Kaya reassures her that true friendship isn’t based on looks. In the end, Ruby begins to understand that her insecurities about her body shouldn’t define her, and that being herself is far more important than trying to fit society's idea of what is beautiful.
