11th Grade Thematic Unit Plans

Benchmark Assessments: These are sectioned out per unit and per standard for the entire year of Civics. Standard Labeled for the WHOLE YEAR: These assessments are labeled with the Common Core Standards of Florida. Using the standard stems from CPALMS. Including Leveled Questions: Each question is labeled with the level. There are a variety of levels to meet PLC needs and full understanding.

SS.7.C.1.1 Recognize how Enlightenment ideas including Montesquieu's view of separation of power and John Locke's theories related to natural law and how Locke's social contract influenced the Founding Fathers. SS.7.C.1.2 Trace the impact that the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, Mayflower Compact, and Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" had on colonists' views of government. SS.7.C.3.2 Compare parliamentary, federal, confederal, and unitary systems of government. This unit has interactive notebook pieces, assessments, and tons of paper-based and technology based items. There are 14 items in this file that hits every part of the standards listed above. It includes a variety of lessons which meet multiple intelligences and different leveled learners. There is no extra work needed. Just pick and chose, print and go!

In this zipped file, you will find the greatest tool I have used yet for the Supreme Court Cases that I have used in years. I simply took 6 manila folders and labeled them with the court case numbers (there are 6 court cases). I glued the court case summary on the right of the inside of the folder and made a pocket on the left with the folded up Supreme Court Decision inside. I number my students off 1-6 and split them up which makes it easy for photocopying with the court cases and the folders make the gallery walk/ learning stations last forever. This is also a great place to throw in some Kagan Structures. The Case Log is the only major photocopying you have to do, or you can have the students copy it down ahead of time. The students take on the role of the Supreme Court Justices as they complete the following as a group of Justices as they take notes, guess the outcome, and finally reveal the actual outcome of each case:

Board of Education, Gideon v. Wainwright, Miranda v. Arizona, in re Gault, Tinker v. Des Moines, Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, United States v. Nixon, and Bush v. Gore.

Background Knowledge: Students should have a working knowledge of trial, appellate, and supreme courts at the state and national levels. Students should understand the appellate process and the significance of judicial precedent, particularly with U.S. Supreme Court rulings. Students should be able to conduct a keyword search and evaluate search results for reliability.

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!
