Student and teacher World History Learning Goal Data Tracker

By History Guru

Ancient and Modern Day World History are both included now!

Administrators always say to put the tracking in the students hands, make sure you are keeping data, and never offer ways to help you do these! Well, that's where I come in! I sat down with the test specs, essential standards, and standard break down sheet to create this awesome excel sheet that you could easily print, distribute, or put in a google sheet that your students can track THEMSELVES! Plus this is also a great tracker for PLC's to ensure all students are learning the content & you are on the same page. this has made our team meetings go SO much soother! This is my favorite tool in my classroom.

Students will track themselves unit by unit & standard by standard with the use of "I can" statements.

Instructions: Step By Step

1. Find the unit we are in right now.

2. Based on the work we have done thus far, please put an x in the box that best describes your knowledge of the "I can" statement.

3. Be sure to revisit this before your test to ensure that You've Got This Down! This is what the Civics team is creating your test off of. If you can move yourself to the final column of "Yes, I can." Then you should score 80% or higher on the test. I will be checking on these :)

4. If you get assigned to an intervention. You will need to edit this on the last day of that cycle

NEW! Africa Geography — Africa Rift Valley: Breakin Up Is Hard (MUSIC INCLUDED)

By Geography & Math Made Easy

A zip file reader is needed to open the file.

This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries and how they affect the African Rift Valley along a divergent plate boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An original teacher-created MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
  2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic plated forces.
  3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.
  4. The student will explore how people, places, and environments changed over time and the effects of these changes.
  5. The student will demonstrate their understanding of the causes and effects of environmental changes on people and the economy.

LESSON INCLUDES:

  • Detailed teacher instructions
  • Suggesting videos (Not Mandatory for Lesson)
  • Lyrics to song + song analysis with teacher answer sheet.
  • Plate Tectonics Map
  • Plate Tectonic Puzzle
  • Group Reading Activity

Geography — Government Types: US History, Is The U.S. a Democracy or a Republic

By Geography & Math Made Easy

Is the United States a true democracy or a true republic or a mixture of both? This is a conceptual thinking lesson on government types and systems implemented to encourage students to develop their higher-level thinking skill sets. Students will gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between a Republic and a Democracy by working in cooperative groups to complete a comparison T-Chart. Based on their findings they will be asked to determine if the United States is a true democracy or a true republic. This can be challenging for students who have yet to develop high-level thinking strategies, but we as teachers must help them develop these skills by giving them opportunities to do so. The student will need to back up their decision with reason. It is suggested that teachers participate in students' learning process by rotating from group to group to check for understanding and provide assistance and redirection. This was used in a 7th-grade public school system but can be used at high-grade levels with success.

Conceptual teaching is based on taking a concept and going beyond the basic facts to develop a true understanding. Conceptual thinking may be challenging for some students; therefore, as the instructor you may need to provide individual guidance, whether students are working individually or in teams. Learners will strengthen their conceptual thinking skills the more they are encouraged to use these skills. With this lesson, I suggest students work in teams so they can learn from one another.

INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE:

  • Articles discussing Republic vs. Democracy (Three are included in PDF form with the purchase of this lesson plan. See the downloaded zip file.)
  • T-chart (printable included)
  • Quotes for display (printable included) —Note: You may choose other ways to display.
  • Writing tools (pen or pencil)
  • Notebook paper
  • Grading rubric
  • Teacher-created poll using one of the suggested sites or a poll box. See the "Closure" section.
  • Approved electronic devices for the poll. Each team will need access.
  • Optional: Second poll for follow-up after presentations/arguments.
