This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Please Note: The instructor/teacher will need to know and understand the concept of REGIONS as this is a concept difficult for young brains to grasp. Even though we simplify it for students, we will need to be ready to verbally or visually explain the concept. Not all students are ready for this high-level concept. This lesson simplifies it as much as possible, but the concept, no matter how simplified, still requires high-level thinking skills and teacher guidance. It takes practice to identify the formal, functional, and perceptual regions. If the instructor/teacher doesn't understand regions, it will be difficult to instruct. This lesson is much better than our textbooks provide.

Help our students understand the complicated concept of "regions."

I often found when I was teaching the 5 Geographical Themes, students grasp location, place, human-environment interaction & movement (ideas, people, goods), but they struggle with regions: formal, functional, and perceptual.

What is the difference between a formal, functional, and perceptual region?

What is a nodal point? How can there be regions that cannot be measured and are specifically based on feelings and perceptions? Can all regions be found on a map? Do they always have a clearly defined boundary?

Students will work in teams — this can be done individually as well but will take a little longer regarding time — to take make a bucket list of places they would like to visit in Australia. They will take a journey to those places (through online resources, books and magazines) and will keep a travel journal of all the places they have visited. Students will enjoy working together and discovering interesting facts about Australia—Down Under. It will allow students not only to enjoy Australia but review the geographical themes as well as learn about the culture.

A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!

Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
• The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
• The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
• The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

• Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
• Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
• Post-it notes for each group
• A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

• Introduction guiding questions and suggested videos
  (Suggested videos are simply suggestions, it will be up to the instructor to select a video if they choose to use one.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.
