It is essential that our students, as future voters, understand how our President and Vice President are elected every four years through the Electoral College. Students will explore, analyze, and summarize political parties using various avenues. In addition, they will look at the Electoral Process system and how events in history led to the ratification of the 12th Amendment. Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

This resource will have students critically explore the period of the Jim Crow era, with a focus on the segregation of schools. This highly engaging, interactive, primary based Slide Presentation will have students analyze and understand the implications of the Jim Crow laws, along with the monumental Supreme Court decisions of 'Plessy v. Ferguson', and 'Brown V. Board of Education'.

The teacher will have a choice of three supplementary activities;

This 30-slide Power Point Lesson and Assessment on the Japanese internment and the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei).

The slides include information about the internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions.

This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation.

I hope that students find this presentation worthwhile and deepens their understanding about an experience that should give everyone pause but also shows the resiliency of both the Issei and Nisei during a very difficult time.

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Perfect for Veteran's Day!

This 12 slide presentation about women in the United States military in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs and posters to convey the experiences on the home front. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding beyond textbook reading. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. This presentation will deepen student understanding about an experience that shaped a nation.

A digital assessment in Easel is provided for teachers to measure student understanding, retention and analysis of the material.
