10th Grade U.S. History Lesson

What does the United States Constitution say about electing a U.S. President and Vice President? How were they originally elected and what led to the changes in our system, leading to developing the Electoral College? It is essential that our students, as future voters, understand how our President and Vice President are elected every four years through the Electoral College. Students will explore, analyze, and summarize political parties using various avenues. In addition, they will look at the Electoral Process system and how events in history led to the ratification of the 12th Amendment. The lesson begins with a Road to the White House PowerPoint and Doodle Notes and a discussion, a student cooperative reading activity, a creation of the perfect candidate, and more.

(1) The learner will analyze the processes involved the reasons we use the electoral college system of presidential selection and the strategy required for a successful victory.

(3) The learner will evaluate the importance in the ratification of Amendment 12 in establishing a process for electing the President.

(4) The learner will use the information gained through the lessons to work cooperatively and create their perfect candidate.

In this product, students will learn about the 19th Amendment, what it is, the timeline as to how the 19th Amendment was put into effect and just how long it took. Information about the process it took and how it was rejected by different parts of the government is shared ranging from 1878 to the November 1920 election, what the women's suffrage movement was, who was involved, and what they did, President Woodrow Wilson, Harry Burn, Senator Aaron A. Sargent, Ellen Clark Sargent, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony and the role that each of them had in the passing of the 19th Amendment, students will learn about Congress - the Senate and the House of Representatives, and will briefly learn about the 3 Branches of Government to help students understand which branch helped pass the 19th Amendment, students will briefly learn about who was involved in World War I and what happened at the end of World War I, why women became involved in World War I, what their roles were in World War I, what jobs women had during this time, and how this lead to the 19th Amendment. Students will also learn about how the 19th Amendment in 1869 was different from 1920 and why, how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was important as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, students will also learn about when women could vote in 15 states from 1869 - 1918, and the first states to ratify the 19 Amendment.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer short answer comprehension questions and multiple choice questions to review what was discussed on previous pages. This is a factual lesson and does not ask students to imagine or place themselves in others' shoes, yet if a child had a family member or experienced the event his/herself, you may not want to subject them to ANY lesson on this topic. This lesson gives a timeline of events and facts about the event.

ALSO NOTE: The closing activity incorporates a song by the Beastie Boys: "Listen, All You New Yorkers" which was written after 9/11 as a Love Letter to New York. (Look it up on Youtube) Depending on your classroom/school culture, you may or may not choose to use this. This is not mandatory for the lesson, but song and music is a good way to engage students. In saying this, the lyrics included in the lesson have been rewritten to take out questionable wording/content. i.e. LSD, Porno, Hell. These words have been replaced with other words. However, the words cannot be taken out of the Youtube video or song. The lyrics can be used without the video or song, but will not be as effective. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG PRIOR TO PURCHASE as this song may not be appropriate for all students/classes/schools.
