Presidential Candidates: Crime & Criminal Justice - US Elections & Voting 2024

By Teach with Ease Collection

This educational article, by Real-World Reports, delves into the key crime and justice policies of the 2024 Presidential candidates, offering young learners a well-rounded look at the complex issues shaping this election. It covers a range of viewpoints from candidates such as Joe Biden’s focus on community policing to another candidate's  stance on hate crime legislation. Students will also explore the visions of Marianne Williamson, who advocates for decriminalizing addiction and improving after-school programs, alongside Donald Trump’s criminal justice reforms and Nikki Haley’s emphasis on restoring law and order.

In addition to policy insights, this resource engages students with creative projects like crafting a “Law and Order” badge and building a mini jail out of popsicle sticks. These activities provide an interactive way for students to explore law enforcement and crime prevention while reinforcing the lessons from the reading. The historical evolution of policing, from its early roots to modern practices focused on community trust, is also examined, offering a deeper understanding of how policing has changed over time.

Ideal for fostering critical thinking and civic engagement, this resource encourages thoughtful discussions and helps students grasp the diverse approaches to crime and justice in the U.S. By examining the policies of each candidate, learners gain a better understanding of the challenges and potential solutions related to law enforcement, rehabilitation, and community relations, empowering them to reflect on their role in shaping society.
