Groundhog Day Morning Work / Activity Pack : Math, Graphing, Opinion Writing

By Mrs Wilsons Neighbourhood

Set the tone for Groundhog Day Learning with our comprehensive Morning Work Activity Pack! This pack features 8 engaging activities spanning math, unplugged coding, science, and writing. Students will delve into symmetry, fill in missing numbers on a hundreds chart using place value, graph predictions for Groundhog Day, explore shadows using flashlights, build puzzle pictures with matching math sentences, solve riddles through math questions, crack a code for Groundhog Day words, and express their opinions in a writing activity.

Activities include

Groundhog Symmetry

Students are presented with half of four different images relating to Groundhog Day. Using a grid, they will draw the other half of each picture as they focus on symmetry.

Missing Numbers

Students use their knowledge of place value to fill in the missing numbers on the page. Cute pictures of groundhogs and weather icons take place of various numbers on the hundreds chart.

Groundhog Graphing

Students will ask 12 classmates to predict whether or not they think the groundhog will see its shadow on Groundhog Day. They record their data using tally marks and then transfer it to a bar graph. Students can then respond to questions about their data.

Shadows

Students learn about shadows using a flashlight. Pages provided show students where to place a tiny object of their choice, and where to hold the light source. They can then trace the shadow on the page. Students will learn to move the flashlight closer or farther to produce a shadow on the paper.

Picture Puzzle

Students first answer a number of math questions. Once completed, they cut the second page of the puzzle activity into strips. They match the number on the strip to the correct math sentence and glue that strip in place to build a picture.

Groundhog Day Riddle

Students LOVE cracking code activities! Answer the addition question and place the appropriate letter in each space to answer the Groundhog Day riddle!

Unplugged Coding

Students can practice their coding skills and strengthen their reading skills at the same time when they use these four coding puzzles to figure out Groundhog Day words. Follow the arrows on a grid to find the letters that spell each word.

Groundhog Day Opinion Writing

Students can draw a picture and then write what they hope will happen on Groundhog Day. Do they want an early spring? Or are they hoping for a longer winter? There are two options of writing lines included.

This pack is perfect for early finishers and morning work routines! You can choose to hand out pages individually, or staple them into a pack to keep at your students' desks. Foster enjoyable learning experiences leading up to Groundhog Day while reinforcing key educational concepts.
