*******************************

Most students have cell phones and regularly communicate with family, friends, and classmates through text messaging. Nearly all students are familiar with this form of communication. Why not teach and practice social skills in a way that resonates with their interests? By using text messaging, students can recognize what effective social skills look and sound like—and what they don’t! These activities will engage students in a fun and relatable way, and no student will be able to resist participating!

This resource includes 10 text message conversations, each offered in three variations to support differentiation, for a total of 30 worksheets. Additionally, the zip file contains a BONUS text messaging resource, featuring one text message conversation in multiple variations, along with an Answer Key.

Text Message Conversation Variation Worksheet Details:

1. Worksheet #1: Contains two questions that are suitable for lower-level students. (These questions ask students to determine if the person has good social skills and support their answer with evidence. The second question asks students to think about how they would respond if they were in the same situation or similar to that.)

2. Worksheet #2: Contains two questions that are suitable for higher-level students. These types of questions are more inference-based and challenge students to think critically about the situation and individuals.

3. **Worksheet #3: **A plain worksheet that only includes the text message conversation (in which you can generate your OWN question). This worksheet contains a box in which students can write the question you generate / or copy a question from the board.

☆☆☆ There are a total of 10 Text Message Conversations in THREE variations.

*******************************

Below are some sample questions (included in the worksheets) for Lower-level students (to help you decide if this resource is suitable for your students):

  • Does Jen have good social skills? Explain your answer and support it with evidence.
  • How would you have responded to your friend in this situation if you felt a little jealous?

For the SAME text message conversation, some sample questions (included in the worksheets) for Higher-level students include:

  • Analyze this text conversation. Why do you think Jen decided to apologize to Cara for being hurtful? Explain your answer and support it with evidence.
  • How do you think Jen should have handled her emotions the moment she felt jealous (instead of being hurtful)?

*******************************

This resource is incredibly effective for struggling readers and writers, particularly those with short attention spans or difficulty maintaining focus during longer texts.

The text message conversations are age-appropriate, highly relevant, familiar, and fun! Students will easily connect with the characters involved in these exchanges. It will be fascinating to observe what students infer from these conversations and how they might respond in similar situations. To extend the activity, consider having students read the texts aloud so they can "hear" examples of strong social skills and recognize what poor communication sounds like.

These Social Skills Text Message Conversation Worksheets can be used in a variety of settings, including as part of a larger lesson, during a mini lesson, or as guided practice. They are also ideal for independent work, pair or group activities, small group discussions, and even for homework or additional practice!

By My Speech Therapy Go-Tos

Teach your students to effectively Self-Advocate At WORK with this Self-Advocacy At WORK Life Skills Problem Solving Scenarios for Older Students Expansion Pack.

Pair these Work Self-Advocacy Problem Solving Scenario Cards with

Self-Advocacy Skills + Life Skills Problem Solving Scenarios for Older Students - students will learn the necessary foundational skills of speaking up and become confident and effective self-advocates in any setting with any communication partner.

I work on improving self-advocacy skills daily with my high school students. My goal is to improve their executive functioning skills to foster independence problem solving and advocating for themselves to get the help they need.

I wanted a way to help them not only learn to self-advocate in life, but to speak up effectively at work, as many of them are already working or will soon be working. Some have part time jobs, some are participating in a work based learning program through school, and some are planning on working in professional settings in the future.

Many of my students have learned to express themselves over the years, but are vague in their expression and forget to include enough detail. They haven’t quite mastered what to say in different situations to ask for help and inform others exactly what they need. This leaves others confused and the students’ needs unmet.

Many of my students have learned to express themselves over the years, but are vague in their expression and forget to include enough detail. They haven't quite mastered what to say in different situations to ask for help and inform others exactly what they need. This leaves others confused and the students' needs unmet.

This Self-Advocacy Formula + Template breaks speaking up into 3 simple and easy-to-follow steps. Students will learn to self-advocate in any problem solving situation in a variety of work settings with confidence.

This Self-Advocacy At Work Expansion Pack includes:

- A Color and a B&W version

- Mini-lesson/Self-Advocacy Formula

- Self-Advocacy Formula Template (Use as a guide when figuring out what to say in each situation).

- 40 Work Self-Advocacy Problem Solving Scenario Cards to practice using the self-advocacy formula in the workplace

* Printable and has been designed to easily be used digitally on any interactive whiteboard or with any digital annotation tool or app.

I am seeing significant improvement in my own students now that they are using this self-advocacy formula. Breaking it down into its parts and then practicing expressing themselves with detail is getting much easier for them and giving them more confidence at their job sites! I hope it does the same for your students!

Thank you for your interest! Enjoy!

Teens today are constantly connected through their cell phones, with texting being one of the primary ways they communicate. While texting makes it easy to stay in touch, it also comes with challenges, as tone and intent can often be misunderstood without face-to-face interaction. Developing strong social skills for texting is essential to ensure that messages are clear, respectful, and considerate of others' feelings. By practicing thoughtful communication, teens can navigate social situations more effectively and avoid unnecessary conflicts or misunderstandings.

This resource features 20 different text conversations designed to help students develop their communication and social skills. Each conversation comes in two versions:

★ Without background information for students ready to respond on their own.

★ With background information included at the bottom of the worksheet to provide additional context and support for thoughtful responses.

The background information is great for students who need extra help understanding the situation and encourages them to respond while considering others' feelings and social dynamics. This format makes it easy to differentiate and meet students' individual needs.

Sample responses are included to support teachers in guiding discussions and providing examples for students.

This worksheet is perfect for practicing empathy, improving social skills, and learning how to handle everyday interactions with care and thoughtfulness.

I wanted a way to help them not only learn to self-advocate in life, but to speak up effectively in the community. This is where they will be faced with a variety of situations, in which they will need self-advocacy and problem solving skills to effectively navigate the situations with various people in various community settings. They can then carry the skills they learn into their futures.

Students will learn to self-advocate in any problem solving situation in a variety of community settings with a variety of people with confidence.

This Self-Advocacy In The Community Expansion Pack includes:

- A Color and a B&W version

- Mini-lesson/Self-Advocacy Formula

- Self-Advocacy Formula Template (Use as a guide when figuring out what to say in each situation).

- Examples to model effective use of the self-advocacy formula and the template

- 40 Community Self-Advocacy Problem Solving Scenario Cards to practice using the self-advocacy formula in the community

* Printable and has been designed to easily be used digitally on any interactive whiteboard or with any digital annotation tool or app.

I am seeing significant improvement in my own students now that they are using this self-advocacy formula. Breaking it down into its parts and then practicing expressing themselves with detail is getting much easier for them and giving them more confidence to self-advocate in any situation they are faced with. I hope it does the same for your students!

Thank you for your interest! Enjoy!

Self-Advocacy At HOME Life Skills Problem Solving Scenarios for Older Students

By My Speech Therapy Go-Tos

This Self-Advocacy At HOME Life Skills Problem Solving Scenarios for Older Students Expansion Pack will equip your students with the skills and confidence to effectively Self-Advocate At HOME .

Pair these Home Self-Advocacy Social Problem Solving Scenario Cards with

Self-Advocacy + Life Skills Social Problem Solving Scenarios for Older Students - students will learn the necessary foundational skills of speaking up and become confident and effective self-advocates in any setting with any communication partner.

I work on improving self-advocacy skills daily with my high school students. My goal is to improve their executive functioning skills to foster independence problem solving and advocating for themselves to get the help they need.

I wanted a way to help them not only learn to self-advocate in life, but to speak up effectively at home. As teachers and therapists, we often focus on school, community, and job skills, because that's what we have access to within the school setting through special programs and the curriculum. However, we frequently hear from families that their children are struggling at home. Often, improved communication, self-advocacy skills, and problem solving skills in the home setting would significantly benefit these children and their families. This Self-Advocacy At HOME resource will help your students effectively and respectfully navigate sensitive situations using self-advocacy and problem solving skills with those closest them (e.g., family, relatives, friends, neighbors, etc.)

Students will learn to self-advocate in any problem solving situation at home with family, friends, and neighbors with confidence.
