Gratitude Challenge Activity: Gratitude Letter Writing Activities

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Thanksgiving and Christmas Gratitude Challenge Activities: I Am Thankful For... Bulletin Board

Research shows that expressing gratitude positively affects mood, peer relationships, and overall higher quality of life. Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, resulting in a more pleasurable state of mind.

Here's the BEST NEWS! This gratitude challenge activity is perfect for any time of year but is particularly timely for Thanksgiving in November and/or any December holiday. It can be used for any grade level.

Grab this gratitude challenge with a gratitude journal in a money-saving bundle here:

GRATITUDE BUNDLE: GRATITUDE CHALLENGE AND GRATITUDE JOURNAL

This file contains bulletin board letters that spell "GRATITUDE CHALLENGE" as well as letters to spell "RIP-N-RECOGNIZE" (these are optional for the bulletin board), 20 RIP-N-RECOGNIZE Gratitude Challenge posters in full color and black and white, teacher tips, a gratitude challenge points page, and letter writing templates.

  • Use these posters on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • Set a goal for students to reach, but issue a “challenge” for students to go above and beyond the recommended goal. Each challenge (poster) is worth TWO points. Students get one point for writing the letter and an additional point for sending or delivering the letter/note. Some posters DO REQUIRE students to research an address. NOTE: The second point on any challenge CANNOT be earned until the letter is dropped off at the post office or delivered in person.
  • You will find a challenge sheet for students to keep track of their points. You can structure the challenge in whatever way works best for your class. You can ask students to RIP-N-RECOGNIZE as an early finisher activity, a bell ringer activity, for a gratitude exercise in Social Studies, or as a writing activity during your ELA block.
  • You may choose NOT to use the points as an incentive and instead teach students that expressing gratitude is an inherently rewarding experience all by itself.
  • Each challenge sheet has enough space for five challenges. Simply offer copies of the same sheet for students who complete more than five letters/notes.
  • Students should rip ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME. Their next challenge can’t be “ripped” until they finish the first challenge they chose. This will eliminate issues with students ripping too many challenges at a time, losing the little ripped notes, and “biting off more than they can chew.”
  • There are 20 challenge options for students. Some challenges might not work for some students. Honor and respect a student’s choice NOT to do challenges that don’t work for their life circumstances. For example, you might have students who don’t know any other family members outside their immediate home, students who are in a foster situation, or students who are homeless. Requiring students to complete ALL the challenges will surely put some students in a vulnerable position, which is not the goal of this activity.

Daily Journal Writing Prompts Morning Work: Quick Writes with Mindful Coloring

Are you looking for creative, easy-to-use, engaging writing prompts for your students?
BONUS... you get to allow students to utilize mindful coloring in their routine? This is for YOU!!

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper and on full-color and black-and-white cards. You'll find 100 ENGAGING WRITING PROMPTS in this file!

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring to support your student's social-emotional well-being.

NOTE: THIS FILE INCLUDES A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

This product includes a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

These journal prompts for 4th grade and up include a coloring doodle border which adds a mindfulness component to each quick write prompt. This file includes 100 journal prompts.

THIS FILE CONTAINS VOLUME ONE. IF YOU'D LIKE TO PURCHASE THE SECOND VOLUME OR THE BUNDLE, PLEASE SEE THE LINKS BELOW:

  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts for Upper Elem. and Middle School VOLUME TWO
  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts BUNDLE

Please make a note of the following:

  • Each prompt allows you to include a mindful coloring component. The border included with these daily quick write journal prompts can be colored before the student answers the prompt (sometimes this gives students time to reflect on what they’d like to write) or after they’ve finished writing.
  • This activity can be used for students as an early finisher activity, a daily journal, for morning meetings, lessons on building community (and empathy), or for mindfulness practice. Please see the instructions for teaching students about mindfulness that are included in this file. If you are interested in additional mindfulness and meditation exercises, click HERE.
  • In addition to the written response pages, I’ve included prompt cards in full color and in black-and-white. These are useful if you choose to discuss the prompts as a class or in small groups. You can also place the cards in a special location and allow students to choose one they’d like to write about on a separate piece of paper.
  • Please remember that some students may not feel comfortable answering or sharing responses. It is important to respect their privacy without pressuring them to share. Either allow them to keep their response(s) private or to choose a different prompt. Forcing the issue will erode their trust in you. Let them know that they are free to share in the future if they choose.
  • It’s okay to take these cards home to share with your family, your own children, your spouse or significant other, or your friends. In addition to providing individual reflection, they are designed to help people get to know each other beyond the surface, develop empathy, and dive deeper in their relationships. I truly believe that when you REALLY get to know your students, they achieve great things!

Please let me know if you have any questions before purchasing this product!

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper as well as on full color and black and white cards. You'll find 100 ENGAGING WRITING PROMPTS in this file (this is VOLUME TWO)! Grab Volume One HERE.

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring which will support your students' social-emotional well-being.

This file includes a link for Google Slides where students can use the text boxes to answer each of the writing prompts. Please refer to the final 7 pages of the product file for this digital option!

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper as well as on full color and black and white cards.

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring.

THIS FILE CONTAINS VOLUME TWO. IF YOU'D LIKE TO PURCHASE THE FIRST VOLUME OR THE BUNDLE, PLEASE SEE THE LINKS BELOW:

  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts for Upper Elem. and Middle School VOLUME ONE
  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts BUNDLE

Please make note of the following:

Let them know that they are free to share in the future, if they choose.

Please let me know if you have any questions prior to purchasing this product!

Gratitude Activities: Gratitude Journal Writing Prompts and Bulletin Board

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Gratitude Activities Challenge & Journal Writing Prompts Thanksgiving/Christmas BUNDLE:

Research shows that expressing gratitude has a positive effect on mood, peer relationships, and an overall higher quality of life.

Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

This gratitude activities bundle includes a gratitude challenge bulletin board and a gratitude journal that is perfect for any time of year, but is particularly timely for the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Here are the links for each of the individual products:

  • Gratitude Challenge: Gratitude Activities Bulletin Board
  • Gratitude Journal Activities

GRATITUDE CHALLENGE BULLETIN BOARD DESCRIPTION:

This gratitude challenge is perfect for any time of year, but is particularly timely for Thanksgiving in November and/or any December holiday. It can be used for any grade level.

This file contains bulletin board letters that spell "GRATITUDE CHALLENGE" as well as letter to spell "RIP-N-RECOGNIZE" (these are optional for the bulletin board), 20 RIP-N-RECOGNIZE Gratitude Challenge posters in full color and black and white, teacher tips, a gratitude challenge points page, and letter writing templates.

NOTE: The second point on any given challenge CANNOT be earned until the letter is dropped off at the post office or delivered in person.
  • Each challenge sheet has enough space for 5 challenges. Simply offer copies of the same sheet for students who complete more than 5 letters/notes.
  • It is best for students to rip ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME. Their next challenge can’t be “ripped” until they finish the first challenge they chose. This will eliminate issues with students ripping too many challenges at a time, losing the little ripped notes, and “biting off more than they can chew”.
Requiring students to complete ALL the challenges will surely put some students in a vulnerable position and that is not the goal of this activity.

GRATITUDE JOURNAL ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION:

These gratitude activities are perfect for any time of year, but are particularly timely for the holiday season during Thanksgiving or Christmas. You will find two gratitude journals in this file as well as gratitude worksheets and printables.

This file contains:

  • The Gratitude Journal with 24 pages of prompts (can be used as daily gratitude prompts during the holidays)
  • Gratitude from A-to-Z (much like a blank dictionary) for students to fill in
  • a hand full of worksheets or printables to help your students reflect on gratitude in their lives

Research on gratitude shows that keeping a gratitude journal has a positive effect on overall mood. Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

Perfect for 1st-5th grade, students can use this daily journal and dictionary to reflect on gratitude in their own lives. This gratitude product also includes printable writing activities.

NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

These products include a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.
