School Counseling Bulletin Board Ideas

Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. With gratitude & written permission from Deb Dana, I'm thrilled to share these activities with fellow educators!

Materials Included:

PowerPoint: Utilize the included PowerPoint slide show to introduce the concept of Glimmers to your students. With 40 slides featuring real-life pictures, students can begin to recognize things that bring them Glimmers. It also helps create connection and shared interests, with their classmates.

Worksheets:

8 student pages

• identify your glimmers (things that make me happy, included, helpful etc)

• track your glimmers

• Things I see, taste and hear that bring me glimmers

Bulletin Board: Colorful lettering (multiple styles) to make a bulletin board for your classroom or your school. Cards are included for students (& staff) to share the things that bring them glimmers

2 pages of "me and my Glimmer". Take a picture of your students happy with their glimmers & attach to the page. A great reminder of the things that bring us joy.

• Morning Mindfulness: Begin each day with a short meditation session where students color mandalas while reflecting on the motivational quote of the day. This can set a positive tone for the day and help students start their day with a calm and focused mindset.
• Mindful Breaks: During breaks or transition periods, allow students to engage in coloring mandalas as a way to take a mindful break. This can help them relax, reduce stress, and return to their tasks with improved focus.
• Positive Affirmations: Pair each mandala with a short motivational quote that reinforces positive affirmations. Encourage students to read and internalize these affirmations as they color, promoting self-confidence and a growth mindset.
