Middle School Vocabulary Graphic Organizers

My Brother Sam is Dead Vocabulary and Character Journal Entry(Chs. 7-9) Hyperdoc

By Nemos Nook

This product builds students' vocabulary and also has them compose a journal entry/letter from the point of view of one character in the novel to another character using text evidence from Chapters 7-9. The vocabulary work, journal entry brainstorming work and final journal entry are all completed directly on the hyperdoc and then submitted for a grade. I share this with students via google drive so that they have their own copy to work with. A sample journal entry is also included. A rubric for the journal is provided via a link in the Character Journal portion of the assignment. This is great to use as an assessment and can be done in class or independently.

Vocabulary Example and Non-Example Graphic Organizer & Poster Activity

By Catholic Kids

This simple graphic organizer can be used with ANY vocabulary words. Students can write in the words and definitions, then think of examples and non-examples for each word. This helps the students think about and discuss vocabulary throughout the lesson. The second page has another graphic organizer that can be used to make a poster about a specific vocabulary word. This can be used as a part of any lesson--I often use this as a differentiation tool for early-finishers or those struggling with a particular word. After posters are made, I use them as an adorable Word Wall!

Vocabulary Graphic Organizer: Example of Use

Whenever I introduce vocabulary, I give the students the definitions and then ask them to find examples and non-examples. My favorite part of that class period is listening to students debate about topics such as whether zombies are an example of a resurrection or a nonexample. Because they're moving so they're like alive again kind of like resurrected, but they're Undead and Jesus wasn't Undead, he was alive again. Not the Living Dead. There's so much theology in that bizarre argument, I love it!

Spelling/Vocabulary Practice

By Shy's Sunshine Room

Instructions:

Description:

✬This assignment is meant to help students not only practice their Spelling words but also to help them acquire a larger vocabulary. There is space for fifteen Spelling words. However, the second page can always be printed again to add additional words as needed. Students should write their Spelling word, the definition, and use it in a sentence.

Tips and advice:

✬It is completely understandable that there might not always be time to incorporate an assignment like this into the students’ regime of homework. Because of that, I have also used this if my students failed their Spelling tests. In my classroom, if they received less than an 80% on a Spelling test, I printed this out on Monday and stapled their test to it. (Others will draw the line at different percentages. I had ESL students who needed the vocab practice.) It was due on Friday. They then had to do this activity with any of the words that they spelled wrong. I would grade this assignment based on correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and correct definitions. Once done, I averaged the grade from this assignment with their test score and entered the new, higher grade into my gradebook. For the ESL students in my class, this assignment was very helpful in broadening their vocabulary.

Free-ACTIVE READING BOOKMARK Bundle vocab, literary devices, idiom tracking

By Kiwious About Vocab

“ Kids really got into using these…great reinforcement.”

These tracking bookmarks will have each student highly engaged with their silent reading books. Whether you want to enrich vocabulary, hi-light the study of literary devices, or zone in on flavorful idioms, these three bookmark trackers allow students to see these elements in their self selected re@ding materials.

Included as well, is a book selection card which is designed to be used with the Accelerated Reading program. These cards completely solved the problem of students not having something to read. It was mandatory in my classroom that students have a silent reading book at all times. If they were nearing the end of a book these cards were a lifesaver I could at my leisure hand pick a book for my own classroom library and have it on their desk ready to read!

The PDF file is organized so that the bookmarks may be copied back to back and folded lengthwise as they will be keeping them in their books until they are completed. If they complete the bookmark before the end of the novel, then they may have a second bookmark. Every new book starts with a fresh tracker!

Bookmarks can be completed and turned in for a reward or bonus points. Some students are just excited to spot classroom topics in their own books. Many will share their unique findings with the teacher and their classmates! Tons of students used multiple trackers, and it WAS NOT REQUIRED!
