Why teach word meaning through nonsense words?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues
• Students must problem solve to find the best word that makes the most sense.
• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

All of these are things we want every student to do! This is something that is already adapted for high and low learners.

Starting with three nonsense words gets students going so they can work in groups or independently to decode the meaning of 7 REAL words (selected from the SAT vocabulary list).

The graphic novel, Clash by Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 14, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, being a kind person even if you don't like someone, being mature, understanding what others are going through, and solving problems with friends and in life. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading. At the end of this product, there are a variety of short answer writing prompts to choose from.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

► There is a "combo" worksheet, which includes all five questions on two pages. There are also 5 separate worksheets that include the same questions on a different worksheet. This allows for more extensive responses. You can have students either complete all five inference-based questions on the "combo" worksheet all at once OR you can have students complete each of the questions at different times: for classwork, independent practice, homework, or formative assessment - your choice! Why Close Reading Now? I wear a variety of professional hats—Department Head, Social Studies Coach, Youth In Government Advisor, Interactive Notebook Team member for the District, Chromebook Leader, tech Leader, School Based Leadership Team, AVID Tutor, and most of all Teacher. To keep myself honest (and humble), I spend a lot of time in classrooms watching kids and teachers at work. During the past few years, I've observed a transformation in the teaching of reading from an approach that measured readers' successful understanding of text through lengthy packets of comprehension questions to one that requires students to think about their thinking, activating their "good reader" strategies. The National Assessment of Educational Progress even made one of those strategies—making reader/text connections—a thinking strand within its framework (National Assessment Governing Board, 2002). This resource focuses on CHAPTER 14 of We Beat The Street and features 5 inference-based questions that require students to demonstrate inferential thinking and a deep analysis of the chapter - beyond literal comprehension. Each inference-based question can be treated as an extended response where students must make inferences and support their responses, ideas, and/or analysis with evidence from the text.

► There is a "combo" worksheet, which includes all five questions on two pages. There are also 5 separate worksheets that include the same questions on a different worksheet. This allows for more extensive responses. You can have students either complete all five inference-based questions on the "combo" worksheet all at once OR you can have students complete each of the questions at different times: for classwork, independent practice, homework, or formative assessment - your choice! You can even give students different questions depending on their levels - excellent for differentiation.

► I also included a blank worksheet for you to generate your own question and students write it in the box!

► A detailed ANSWER KEY for the questions have been included. As students are learning the 46 - 2nd grade sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence, and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using each newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the 2nd grade sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.
