Finding The Number Of Solutions BTC Thin Slicing Lesson | Grade 8 Math

By EZMath

This lesson has everything you need to teach a "Thin Slicing" lesson on determining if a linear equation has one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions (8.EE.7a) for 8th grade using the Building Thinking Classrooms strategies for teaching math created by Peter Liljedahl. If you have been looking to implement the Building Thinking Classrooms model of instruction, but don't know where to start, this is a great resource for you.

This lesson includes the following materials:

  • Description of how I run a "Thin Slicing" lesson using Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces in my own classroom.
  • 11 Full-Size Task Cards on finding the number of solutions in a linear equation.
  • Answers for all Task Cards.
  • "Notes To My Future Forgetful Self" Student Notes Template.
  • Student Notes answer key.
  • "Check Your Understanding" student Exit Ticket.
  • Exit Ticket answer key.

This lesson will help your students learn how to determine if a linear equation has one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solution. This lesson starts with a very low floor to encourage access for all students, and builds up the rigor in "thin slices" until it reaches a high ceiling with challenging extension questions. Once complete, students can use the provided notes template to record their thinking, as well as a "Check Your Understanding" exit ticket to give you and your students formative assessment feedback on how they are understanding the topic.

This lesson is the 3rd in a series for 8th grade equation solving. The two previous lessons are:

1. Solving Equations "Thin Slicing" Lesson: Grade 8

2. Equations With Variables On Both Sides "Thin Slicing" Lesson: Grade 8

Please consider using the previous two lessons before trying this one.

If you enjoy this product, please leave a review and check out my other products. I will be adding more Thin Slicing lessons in the future based on this model.

If you would like to know more about how I use Building Thinking Classrooms in my own class, check out my blog. I am also creating and refining more thin slicing lessons, so follow my store or check back regularly to see what's new.

Estimating with Compatible Numbers-Division

By Ann Stewart

Dear Educators,

Every year my students struggle with division. The fear of  finding the right number to start the quotient paralyzes them. Over the years I’ve found a couple tricks to get my students started thinking of compatible numbers they could try as the quotient and then work backwards or forwards depending on the answer. Giving them a starting point takes away the fear. I hope this anchor chart/ student notebook printable helps give your students the confidence to find possible quotients it has given my students.

Lesson - 3D Geometry - Volume of Prisms - Working Backwards, Solve for B or h

By Manic Math Teacher

Lesson - Volume of Rectangular & Triangular Prisms - Working Backward, Solving for the Area of the Base (B) or height (h)

This product includes notes which can help to introduce or review working backwards from the volume to determine either the area of the base (B) or the height (h) of the prism.

Intentions
My goal for my products are for students to have solid, skill based resources that they can go back and reference at anytime. The notes section of my products include a detailed step by step explanation of each problem with all work shown. By including the steps for each skill this will help to comply with various accommodations we must provide our students. The practice section will include skill based practice problems similar to the example and at least one version of the various ways questions are asked. The quick check section will include at least one problem of each type of question that was seen in the practice section. A suggested use of these notes would be:

  1. Initial Teach: Review any vocabulary and notes with the students to introduce the topic.

  2. Guided Practice: Complete the practice section with students, either as a guided, with a partner, or independently. Review answers immediately.

  3. Independent Practice: This will need to be supplemented, I personally prefer having students work on an online program which will provide instant feedback and a variety of questions. I prefer to have students utilize websites that will provide real time support and results to students. Another possibility would be to pair with one of my color by number assignments. This is good option because students have to find their answer on the coloring sheet, if their answer is not there they immediately know that a mistake was made and can has for assistance. Look for corresponding activities in the bundles listed here.

  4. Assessment: The quick is a great informal assessment tool, this can be used as either an exit ticket or you may choose to take this as a grade depending on what works for you and your students.

As technology is progressing, there are many fantastic software programs that schools are acquiring, I believe as students learn they must be receiving instant feedback on their work so they can grow and improve in real time. As a result, my products are focused solely on the skill itself. I am only including a small variety of questions for each topic, my intention is for students to use these notes as a guide as they practice and utilize whichever software/online program/additional practice you are providing.

Convert Fractions to Repeating Decimals with Long Division Investigation

By MsVisualizer

This is an investigation activity that students can do independently or in groups to discover the patterns when converting fractions to repeating decimals. It provides examples of how to use long division to convert a fraction to a decimal and then has students apply the same strategy to other fractions with the same denominator. These examples make it great for a sub plan or for early finishers with no instruction needed from the teacher.

Students will investigate the patterns in the decimals for fractions with denominators of 9ths, 3rds and 7ths.

It includes reflection questions to generalize the patterns and apply them to make predictions.

Adding and Subtracting Integers Slideshow, Notes and Practice

By MsVisualizer

This includes a slideshow and corresponding notes sheet to help students really understand what happens when you add and subtract integers using a silly but relatable analogy. The slideshow and notes includes 5 examples with the question on one slide and the answer on the next. The practice includes guided practice (using the same analogy) and many more bare problems for students to internalize the thought process.
