This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the Inca, Mayan & Aztec civilizations which is studied in the 5th grade curriculum under the following standards:

• 5.1 The first humans in the Western Hemisphere modified their physical environment as well as adapted to their environment. Their interactions with their environment led to various innovations and to the development of unique cultures.
• 5.1a Various forms of scientific evidence suggest that humans came to North America approximately 25,000 to 14,000 years ago and spread southward to South America.
• 5.1b Human populations that settled along rivers, in rainforests, along oceans, in deserts, on plains, in mountains, and in cold climates adapted to and made use of the resources and environment around them in developing distinct ways of life.
• 5.1c Early peoples living together in settlements developed shared cultures with customs, beliefs, values, and languages that give identity to the group. These early peoples also developed patterns of organization and governance to manage their societies.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to collect ancient treasures lost in these civilizations. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have found and collected the treasures!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

These units are focused on close reading in history/social studies, primarily in the discipline of history, and using text-dependent questions to help students gain a deeper understanding of informational texts. Unit 3 will offer suggestions for how to implement FL CCSS in the other related disciplines of civics, economics, and geography.

Why Close Reading Now?

I wear a variety of professional hats—Department Head, Social Studies Coach, Youth In Government Advisor, Interactive Notebook Team member for the District, Chromebook Leader, tech Leader, School-Based Leadership Team, AVID Tutor, and most of all Teacher. To keep myself honest (and humble), I spend a lot of time in classrooms watching kids and teachers at work. During the past few years, I've observed a transformation in the teaching of reading from an approach that measured readers' successful understanding of text through lengthy packets of comprehension questions to one that requires students to think about their thinking, activating their "good reader" strategies. The National Assessment of Educational Progress even made one of those strategies—making reader/text connections—a thinking strand within its framework (National Assessment Governing Board, 2002). For a long while, this approach looked ideal. What could be better than creating metacognitive readers?

Social Studies Bellwork/ Bellringer/ Close Read models to start your day:

Product Description:

The students will complete the bellwork in a 5 day model. Each day is a scaffolded release of questions targeted at 5 main language arts standards. This allows students to pick apart the important information while meeting their language arts requirements in social studies

Bellwork Procedure:

Conversation: There is no talking during Bellwork time. Silently get Bellwork out from the bin & return it silently as well. Quiet/ voices off from entrance into the classroom till last Bellwork is put away.

Help: There should be no talking during this activity, so if you have a question: please raise your hand quietly, wait patiently, & once I can I will answer your question. Please think about the wording of your question before you ask, seeing as this is an assessment.

Activity: Bellwork day 1-4: One question per day.

Bellwork 5: Quiz= do all four questions.

Students will read informational text to review what they have learned concerning Ancient Greek city-states. This text is also a good overview of city-states for those students who haven't learned about Ancient Greek city-states. This informational text sheet also includes instructions about the project.

Did you know that the idea of “sealed with a kiss” comes from Romans who signed every contract with a kiss? Did you know that a good luck symbol to ancient Romans were snakes? This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the Silk Road which is studied in the 6th grade curriculum under the following standards: 6.7 Trade networks promoted the exchange and diffusion of language, belief systems, tools, intellectual ideas, inventions, and diseases.

• Students will examine what and where the Silk Road was.
• Students will examine the economic and cultural exchange along the trade route.
• Students will examine the challenges faced and the causes of the decline of this prominent route.
• Students will examine the major cities along the route.
• Students will examine effect of the Mongol Empire on the Silk Road.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to collect historically accurate goods from along the Silk Road for their ruler in exchange for a reward. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have collected the valuable goods and get to collect their reward from their ruler!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!
