Recognizing Variables in Expressions
By Colleen Burdette
Hands on introduction to variables:
Students are more invested when they can move, even a little bit. This activity has students organizing cards into two categories: variable and no variable. They will recognize that letters are used for terms in expressions that are unknown.
Teachers can use these cards in a variety of ways. I have put Velcro on the back of the card and made posters with Velcro labelled "variable" and "no variable". Students in teams raced to place their cards on the correct poster. A super fun activity to introduce variables.

5th Grade Algebra Review Game - Game Show Style
By The M-Intercept
Students will love this Jeopardy-like review game to review all 5th Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards. Questions focus on solving expressions, writing expressions, equivalent expressions, analyzing patterns, mixed review, and key vocabulary words. Points range from 100 - 500, which reflect the increase in difficulty throughout each category.
**FULLY EDITABLE** While the game is complete, it is also editable in PowerPoint, making it easy to add questions or change the level of difficulty based on your students' needs.
The game includes 30 high quality questions - 6 categories with 5 questions each ranging in
difficulty from basic review (100) to challenging (500)
⭐Solve Expressions: these questions require students to solve equations using the order of operations. All expressions are straightforward whole numbers, except the 500 point question, which has fractions.
⭐Write Expressions: this category asks students to write expressions from phrases such as "nine more than six" and then increases in difficulty to writing an expression to match a real-world problem.
⭐Equivalent Expressions: students are asked about whether or not expressions are equivalent based on the order of operations, use of parentheses and different ways to display division symbols.
⭐Analyze Patterns: these questions involve continuing a pattern such as "add 8" and continue on to questions matching real-world situations. Some questions require reading and/or using a table or the coordinate plane.
⭐Mixed Review: students are asked computation problems to review adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, as well as questions involving place value.
⭐Vocabulary: this section asks about parentheses, expressions, evaluating, x and y coordinates, and corresponding terms.

By Geography & Math Made Easy
LESSON: ONE_STEP EQUATIONS PUZZLE GAME
GRADE LEVEL: MIDDLE SCHOOL
TIME FRAME: 1 HOUR
OBJECTIVE:
o The learner will work to solve one-step equations with rational numbers.
o The learner will solve equations that include decimals fractions, to solve for x.
MATERIALS:
o Scissors
o Zip lock bags
o Construction paper and glue
o Optional: lamination for storage and reuse. If you choose this, construction paper and glue will not be needed, as they will not glue the pieces to construction paper.
o Print out of puzzle for the instructor as an answer sheet.
PREPARATION:
Students will be working in pairs to complete the equations puzzle, which requires students to solve one-step equations with rational number. Place students in teams of two. Duplicate enough copies for each team to have one puzzle. Cut out the puzzle pieces and place them into a Ziplock bag.
Optional: You may laminate the puzzle pieces for reuse if you choose to keep the pieces to use one year to the next. However, you will not need construction paper and glue if lamination is chosen.
INTRODUCTION: (20 minutes)
Ask students what constitutes an equation.
Answer: An equation says that two things are equal, and may contain two or more
variables.
Ask students what constitute a rational number.
Answer: A number that you can put into fraction such a decimal, fraction, percent or
whole number.
Review how to work through a one-step equation using the following equations:
• 5x=80 Answer (16)
• x+-20=17 Answer: (37)
• x-(-10)=-10 Answer: (-20)
• x-4 1/3=2 2/3 Answer: (7)
HELPFUL VIDEO: (10 minutes)
Helpful Youtube video links included.
TEAM ACTIVITY: (30 minutes)
Provide each team with a puzzle in a Ziplock bag. Provide students 15-30 minutes to solve the equations and place the puzzle together. You may even encourage a competition to see which groups can complete the puzzle first providing prizes to first place, second place, and third place. Once they have the puzzle completed, have them glue it to a piece of construction paper if you have not chosen to laminate the game pieces for reuse.
CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (20 minutes)
Using an overhead projector or smart board projector that will display the puzzle pieces, work with the class to solve the puzzle. Students will check their answers.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY/HOMEWORK
Give students a blank chart and allow them to create a puzzle for that they can give to another group/student to complete. Make sure the student keeps a copy of the puzzle to act as the answer sheet.
TEACHER’S ANSWER SHEET
Each puzzle has the answers in itself before being cut into puzzle pieces. The equations on the outer edges of the puzzle will not have answers to match. This makes the puzzle more challenging

Graphing Linear Functions Differentiated Review Activity | Grade 8 Math
By EZMath
Level Ups are a fun way for your students to practice or review graphing linear functions in both slope-intercept form and standard form. Aligned to the common core standards, this Level Ups activity includes 5 differentiated tasks that increase in rigor. The task cards begin with pre-requisite skills involving proportional relationships and the basics of slope and y-intercept, then "level up" all the way to creating an appropriately scaled graph for a given linear function scenario.
Students start at level zero and work their way up to level 4, giving them accurate feedback on what they have mastered, and what they still need to work on. This lesson works as a great way to review what is and is not a function, or as preparation for an upcoming assessment.
This activity includes:
My students love "Level Up Day" in my own classroom, and the activity works great as independent practice, a pairs activity, or even group work. I also use this when I need a majority of students working independently while I pull a small group for intervention.
If you enjoy this activity, please check out my other Level Up products, or my Team Target Review series, which encourages group work and rich math discussion.
