Simplifying and Expanding | Introducing Algebra Worksheets
By LittleStreams
This is the first worksheet in our Introduction to Algebra series.
This pack is filled with worksheets designed to introduce students to the idea of collecting like terms, simplifying expressions, and expanding single parentheses/brackets. It contains both British English and American English terminology, and each worksheet is differentiated 3 ways.
Also included are the same worksheets, but put into differentiated workbooks, so you can hand these to your students to use as homework, or an ongoing project.
The worksheets consist of the following:
Worksheet 1 Writing Algebra - Introduces students to best practices in how to write algebra and definitions of the terms we use.
Worksheet 2 Like Terms - introduces the concept of like terms in expressions.
Worksheet 3 Term Trees - solidifies like terms, using the idea of trees as terms.
Worksheet 4 Combining Like Terms Pyramid - uses pyramids as a way to simplify terms, as well as consisting of standard simplifying questions (without parentheses/brackets).
Worksheet 5 Collecting Terms Crossword - a crossword with standard simplifying questions (without parentheses/brackets).
Worksheet 6 Geometry in Algebra - requires writing the perimeter of shapes where the lengths are given as expressions, teaching students to simplify expressions as they work.
Worksheet 7 Expanding Single Parentheses/Brackets - introduces the concept of expanding single parentheses/brackets. It also includes simplifying expressions that includes parentheses/brackets.
Worksheet 8 Simplifying Word Link - an activity where you connect expressions with their simplified form, drawing through letters to answer a clue about an ancient civilization.
Worksheet 9 Collecting Terms Maze - students find the correct path by answering simplified questions. It is a multiple choice sheet.
Worksheet 10 Riddle Me This Simplifying - asks students to simplify expressions including using division, expanding parentheses and dealing with negative numbers. The solutions each link to a letter which gives the solution to a clue about a mathematical artifact.

The link to the digital puzzle is on a clickable PDF that you would download once purchased. Students will put the answers in the answer box (numerator/denominator or whole number fraction). This activity is no prep and is self checking. If the student puts the correct answer in, the answer box will turn green and a piece of the digital puzzle will appear in the green box to the right.
