Ultimate Guide to Naming Ionic and Molecular Compounds (including acids!)

By Stephanie O.

Walk your students through this straightforward flowchart for naming ionic compounds, binary molecular compounds, binary acids, and oxyacids. (Check out the video preview for a demo!)

This diagram maps out the exact instructions I use with my tutoring students if they've been overwhelmed or stumped by their chemistry teacher's instructions.

What's included:

  • how to tell the difference between an ionic compound and a molecular compound from its formula

  • the foolproof way to name ionic compounds:

  1. name the cation, considering whether it's monoatomic or polyatomic,

  2. name the anion, considering whether it's monoatomic or polyatomic,

  3. string the two names together!

  • transition-metal exceptions that don't need a Roman numeral in their name (clearly organized so you can cross out the ones that you don't expect your students to know)

  • numerical prefixes (1-10) for naming molecular compounds

  • color-coded mnemonics to aid in understanding how to construct an acid's name

  • the naming quirks for acids with phosphorus and sulfur, so your students don't overlook them!

Suitable for intro high school chemistry, AP Chemistry, IB Chemistry SL/HL, college general chemistry, and MCAT.

Risk-free: if you're not delighted by how useful this study guide is, I'll refund you 100%, no questions asked.

Ultimate Guide to Mitosis (graphic organizer, handout, study guide)

By Stephanie O.

Lay out clearly and concisely what you want your students to know about each phase of mitosis, using this handy chart.

This table maps out the exact breakdown I use with my tutoring students if they've been overwhelmed or stumped by their biology teacher's explanation.

What's included:

+ key events in prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase

+ vocabulary definitions

+ color-coding mnemonics to aid understanding (prophase and telophase mirror each other!)

+ BONUS: cytokinesis (and how it differs in animal cells vs plant cells)

Example uses:

+ add it to the end of your lecture notes as a recap

+ hand it out as a supplement to practice questions on identifying what stage of mitosis a cell is in based on a microscopy image or a sketch

+ provide it as a summary study guide for a unit test on mitosis

Suited for intro high school biology, AP Biology, IB Biology SL/HL, intro college biology, and MCAT.

Ultimate Guide to the Polyatomic Ions (graphic organizer, handout, study guide)

By Stephanie O.

Help your students memorize the polyatomic ions using this handy reference sheet, instead of overwhelming them with a laundry list of ions in no particular order. (Check out the video preview for a demo!)

These charts map out the exact tactics I use with my tutoring students if they've been overwhelmed or stumped by their chemistry teacher's instructions.

What's included:

+ 2 pages with the names and chemical formulas of the polyatomic ions listed here

+ clear organization for quick, easy reference (also: easily instruct your students to cross out ions you don't expect them to memorize)

+ precise prompts to foster student-centered learning (identifying and explaining the patterns in the ions' names and chemical formulas)

+ color-coding mnemonics to aid students in making connections between the ions' names and constituent elements

+ memorization tips that encourage study skills like chunking, elaborative interrogation, and active recall

+ BONUS 3rd page: straightforward explanation of all of the patterns (choose whether to include this page for your students as additional scaffolding, or to post it later as an "answer key," or to exclude it entirely)
